This ‚Suite’ is not one of my ‘epic’ instrumental concertos such as the concertos for cello, violin or oboe, but a substantially smaller-structured series of dance forms arranged into a suite. Sunken worlds suddenly emerge here, only to reach the surface, hover in dangerously distorted fashion and then sink back to the bottom. Almost every individual movement allots the solo flute a specific tonal colouring and an instrumental group from the orchestra: in the opening Allemande, the flutes of the orchestra (including alto and bass flute and later also piccolo to include the entire flute family); the string section in the Sarabande; in both chorales (extremely muted in the first and brutalist in the second), the brass etc.; and it is only in the concluding Badinerie that all orchestral groups are combined, although they are terraced in the Baroque style, one following another, seldom all playing simultaneously. This permits the flute to remain the provider of all impulses; it attaches itself to the wide variety of instrumental colours, becomes suffused with these colours and thereby shines in different lights – acerbic, pale and radiant. This first performance marks the conclusion of my two-year residence with the Cleveland Orchestra. The immense versatility of this fine body of sound (which is indeed treated as such with the sum of its parts) and the exciting dark timbre of its principal flautist Joshua Smith have to a great extent determined the form and tonal character of my Flûte en suite. This is an extended, fantasia like setting of the Passion Chorale for solo flute and piano. The original version was for solo violin and organ (also available on SMP Press) While the organ part could mostly be played on a piano,  this version incorporates the organ pedal notes more clearly. The chorale melody was used by Bach in his St Matthew Passion, and is also in many hymn books as O Sacred Head Sore Wounded. For advanced performers, it is suitable as Prelude music throughout Lent, perhaps especially at a Tenebrae service. It could also be programmed as part of a recital. It is over five minutes in length. A MIDI recording is provided, and a performance with violin and organ is available in that version's listing. Like Cantatas 73 and 111, it is a chorale cantata, employing a chorale melody in several movements. In this version, the composition was arranged for Flute and Piano by Harry Walker.

This version of the piece was adapted for Flute along with a piano accompaniment that comes with the product.

This easy arrangement for flute and piano was adapted to be simple to perform and understand the structure of the original work for various levels of musical knowledge. This is a choral cantata, employing a choral melody in several movements. Cantata 156, in fact, employs two different choral melodies and texts in the second and sixth movements. A cantata is a sung symphony consisting of several parts, one of which is the Arioso, which is the initial instrumental part.

The Air by Johann Sebastian Bach at best can rival his setting Jesus bleibet meine Freude for popularity: The final chorus from the cantata BWV 147 Heart and Mouth and Deed and Life is really catchy because of its simplicity and perfection of which one can hardly get enough. The well known melody Nun Danket is arranged in a contemplative style for flute and piano. The flute writing is straightforward, stating the chorale melody in equal length phrases and mainly in the second octave. The piano accompanies with gentle upward moving eighth-note figures, the overall effect is one of contemplation and a sense of quiet fulfillment. This arrangement would be an ideal prelude or reflective offering in a service of worship.
