Donizetti's opera L'Elisir d'amore (1832) was a brilliant success with both critics and the public. The first run alone lasted for 33 performances. L'Elisir remains an important work in the repertory of major opera houses in the twenty-first century.
The Larghetto aria 'Una furtiva lagrima' (A furtive tear) is the romanza from act 2, scene 8. It is arranged here for advanced-intermediate Piano Quartet consisting of Concert Flute, Clarinet in Bb, Piano and Cello.
The original key is a minor, but this new setting in Bb minor has a darker sound that is much better suited to these instruments.
