SKU: A0.1426085

Composed by Duncan Druce, Edward Cowie, Michael Ball, Nicholas Marshall, and Peter Racine Fricker. Arranged by John Turner. 20th Century,Classical,Contemporary. Score and part. 44 pages. Forsyth Brothers Ltd #1006899. Published by Forsyth Brothers Ltd (A0.1426085).

Forsyth's Modern Wind Music series contains exciting and challenging, but not unduly difficult, works by talented English composers of current or recent vintage for recital, study or recreation. Each volume includes three works with piano, one unaccompanied piece, and one piece for two or more players of the instrument.

This volume for flute has a natural history slant. Lacerta Agilis by Duncan Druce is a portrait of a sand lizard, Michael Ball's piece takes as its cue the Greek legend of Philomel who was turned into a nightingale to escape the Wrath of Tereus, whilst Edward Cowie's A Lesson For Reed Warblers (for two flutes) is designed for one bird (or flute) to teach the other to sing. The magical solo work in the album is Two Spells by Peter Recine Fricker, and the remaining piece is Nicholas Marshall's rhythmic and jazz-influenced Jump.

Contents:
Jump by Nicholas Marshall
Lacerta Agilis by Duncan Druce
Philomel by Michael Ball

By James Strauss. By Richard Strauss. Arranged by James Strauss. 20th Century,Chamber,Contemporary,Jewish,Sacred. Score and part. 31 pages. James Strauss #878687. Published by James Strauss (A0.1287662).

Strauss and the Dance of the Seven Veils

The Dance of the Seven Veils is a performance by Salome before King Herod Antipas, depicted in modern stage productions, literature, and visual arts. This dance is an elaboration of the New Testament story of the Feast of Herod and the execution of John the Baptist. While the New Testament does not give the dance a name, the title Dance of the Seven Veils originated from the 1893 English translation of Oscar Wilde's French play, Salome, which included the stage direction Salome dances the dance of the seven veils. Richard Strauss also incorporated the dance into his opera Salome in 1905.

The concept of Salome's dance involving seven veils can be traced back to Wilde's play, where he was influenced by earlier French writers who portrayed Salome as a symbol of female lust. Wilde envisioned the dance as an act of unveiling, symbolizing the revealing of Salome's true self. He drew inspiration from Gustave Flaubert's story Herodias, in which Salome performs a hand dance to please Antipas. Wilde initially intended to follow Flaubert's version but later changed his approach.

The idea of the dance being associated with veils can be linked to the popularity of veil dances during that time, which were westernized interpretations of Middle Eastern dance styles. Notably, the dancer Loïe Fuller was known for her veil dances. Wilde's play did not provide a detailed description of the dance, but it is commonly assumed to involve a series of veils being removed, symbolizing the process of unveiling oneself.

Strauss's operatic adaptation of Salome also includes the Dance of the Seven Veils. Although the dance remains unnamed in the music, Salome's sexual fascination with John the Baptist seems to motivate her request, while Herod appears pleased. The visual interpretation of this scene can vary depending on the production, with some emphasizing its eroticism. Strauss specified that the dance should be thoroughly decent, as if it were being done on a prayer mat, but some performances have portrayed it in a more explicit manner.

James Strauss's choice to program well-known orchestral pieces for the flute and piano stems from the technical challenges they present, both instrumentally and interpretatively. It allows the flautist to explore different timbres and a romantic style of playing, inspired by Orchestral mass sustained phrases and intense vibrato found in this repertoire. Transcribing orchestral pieces for the flute presents certain difficulties, such as playing loudly and with a full tone in the lower register or producing high notes that gradually fade away. Despite these challenges, the purpose is to challenge the flute's traditional role and explore its expressive capabilities through this repertoire.

Composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Arranged by Wolfgang Birtel. This edition: piano reduction with solo part. Flute - Orchestra - teaching repertoire - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Schott Student Edition - Repertoire. Downloadable, Piano reduction with solo part. Duration 5 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q49450. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q49450).

Key: C major. German • English • French.

Even though Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791), admittedly, was no fan of the flute, he wrote unforgettable music for this instrument 'that I can't stand': two concertos, a double concerto with harp, the original version of the Wind Concertante and the four flute quartets. Commissioned by the Dutch physician and amateur musician Ferdinand Dejean, Mozart wrote his two solo concertos in 1777/78 during a stay in Mannheim. As the middle movement of the Concerto in G major KV 313 supposedly was too difficult for the client – with regard to the playing technique and/or music – the composer wrote an alternative version, 'Andante' KV 315 (285e). This nice individual movement is now presented in a carefully edited new edition, with a cadenza of the editor – a serenade-like setting that offers the soloist many possibilities for cantabile playing.

Op. 6/5. Composed by Charles Marie Widor. Edited by Edmund Wachter and Elisabeth Weinzierl. This edition: Sheet music. (c) 2020 Schott Music GmbH & Co. KG, Mainz. Classical. Downloadable. Volume op. 6/5. 7 pages. Schott Music - Digital #Q53385. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q53385).

English • German.

Having grown up in a family of organ-builders and organists, the path of Charles-Marie Widor as an organist was predestined. In 1870 he moved from Lyon, the town of his birth, to Paris and became titular organist at Saint-Sulpice. In 1890 Widor succeeded César Franck as professor of organ studies at the Paris Conservatoire, where six years later he was appointed professor of composition, too. Alongside orchestral works, solo concertos, vocal pieces and chamber music, Widor’s most important musical achievement was his contribution to the genre of the organ symphony. His Suite op. 34 for flute and piano, structured around a Romance (1881) and composed for Paul Taffanel, may be considered as marking the beginning of the modern French flute school: here for the first time a composition makes full use of the bright tone of the Böhm flute, as introduced to the music world by Taffanel and his pupils. This Sérénade op. 65 is the arrangement of a duo for harmonium and organ. No further information about the arranger has been found. Plate no. 27148 / published in 1903.
