Composed by Gabriel Faure. Arranged by Amir Awad. Concert,Romantic Period,Standards. Score and parts. 49 pages. Amir Awad #3506351. Published by Amir Awad (A0.772375).

This piece is originally composed by Gabriel Fauré for Flute and piano , and it is arranged for Flute and String Orchestra

This elegant solo has some beautiful melodic lines and is Impressionistic in form and harmony. An excellent teaching piece to emphasize phrasing and musicality, or a great programming choice when a lovely lyrical moment is needed!

This famous work is dedicated to Paul Taffanel, often called the father of the modern French school of the flute. He was a busy man, active at the Opéra de Paris, in the Conservatoire concerts, as the leader of the Orchestre de la Société des Instruments à Vent, and, from 1893, as a professor at the Conservatoire. Fauré was appointed professor of composition there in 1896, and it was almost inevitable that Taffanel should ask him, in the spring of 1898, to write a sight-reading piece (the Morceau de lecture) and a concours composition for the July examinations. Fauré decided to pass the orchestration of his incidental music for Maeterlinck's play Pelléas et Mélisande, on which he had been feverishly working, to his pupil Charles Koechlin, so he could get to grips with the concours piece. The Fantaisie for flute and piano occupied him from the beginning of June until at least mid-July.

The piece opens with an E-minor sicilienne of great charm, but soon gets to a C-major Allegro filled with lightning-fast pyrotechnics. Writing to Koechlin, Fauré complained:

I am drowned in the Taffanel and plunged up to my neck in scales, arpeggios, and staccati! I have already perpetrated 104 bars of this irksome torture

The first performance of the Fantaisie was given by the concours winner, Gaston Blanquart, on July 28, 1898.

Composed by Gioachino Rossini, Frederic Chopin. Arranged by Yoon Jae Lee. Instructional,Opera,Romantic Period,Standards. Score and part. 31 pages. Ondine Press #5377025. Published by Ondine Press (A0.866120).

This is a piano reduction to Yoon Jae Lee’s arrangement, Variations on “Non più mesta†for flute and orchestra. The full score and set of parts are available separately. Rossini's aria from La Cenerentola Non più mesta has been a popular theme since it was first composed and is one of his most recognized tunes. Many paraphrases and variations were written on it in the 19th century for various instruments including one for violin and orchestra by Paganini. One set of variations for flute and piano is attributed to a young Chopin, who is said to have composed it for his father. For this arrangement, the variations have been expanded with an introduction and coda from the opera. A newly written orchestral accompaniment in the style of Chopin and Rossini was made along with interludes between the variations to allow the soloist to rest. The result is a new 10 minute showpiece for flute and orchestra in the same vein as Chopin's Variations on La ci da rem la mano and Rossini's variations for clarinet and orchestra. The flute part from the variations has not been altered so it is hoped that this new compilation will be a welcome addition to the solo flute repertoire. Composed by Clémence de Grandval. Arranged by Paul Wehage (édition). Classical,Romantic Period. Score and part. 79 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #950947. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.1366608).

Maria-Félicie-Clémence de Grandval (1828–1907) was born on January 28, 1828 at Saint-Rémy-des-Monts, France and died on January 15, 1907 in Paris. After the death of her mother,Louise Adèle du Temple de Mésières, her father the Baron de Reiset, a military officer remarriedwith an Englishwoman and moved his family to London. After beginning her musical studiesprivately, she studied the piano with the German composer Friedrich von Flotow, who was a family friend. Returning to France, she studied the piano briefly with Chopin and composition with Camille Saint-Saëns. At first writing mostly sacred music, most of her public success was due to her comic operas: la Comtesse Eva, la Pénitente, Piccolino and Mazeppa. She also wrote orchestral music, chamber music, and over 60 songs (to poets such as Sully Prudhomme, MichelCarré, Henri Meilhac, Georges Hartmann, Charles Grandmougin and Louis Gallet.) She is chieflyknown today for her music for wind instruments, especially for the oboe.

Composed by Erik Satie. Arranged by Mark Reeves. 20th Century,Film/TV,Multicultural,Wedding,World. Score and part. 13 pages. Mark Reeves #3029515. Published by Mark Reeves (A0.748673).

Erik Satie's Trois Gymnopedies were written for piano solo but lend themselves perfectly to being played by other musical instruments too. Indeed, Claude Debussy arranged the first and third Gymnopedies for orchestra.

These arrangements for flute with piano accompaniment would fit nicely into a school concert programme and are also perfect for wedding ceremonies. Performance time for each piece is approximately 2.5 to 3 minutes.

Breath marks are not indicated, as the long phrases should ideally be played in one breath if possible. A separate part is supplied for the soloist.

The composer's original autographed manuscripts have been used as the initial source material, along with the very first printed editions published in 1888 and 1895. Obvious errors in these first editions have been corrected and Satie's unconventional preference for distributing the notes of chords across both staves has been ignored in favour of grouping the notes together to facilitate chord recognition and performance.

By Barbara Arens. By Barbara Arens. Arranged by Barbara Arens. Chamber,Contemporary,Contest,Festival,Instructional,Jazz. Score and part. 131 pages. Barbara Arens #1069102. Published by Barbara Arens (A0.1492428).

As a former very keen flute player (I loved playing in the Singapore Youth Symphony Orchestra, and studied flute for several years at the Mozarteum in Salzburg before concentrating on keyboard instruments) I enjoy writing for the Flute. This collection starts off with 8 pieces using titles of René Magritte's surrealist paintings. The titles, which I found really inspiring, were thought up by Magritte's friend, the surrealist poet Louis Scutenaire: La sens de la nuit; La clef des songes; Les signes du soir, etc. There are 3 pieces inspired by Shakespeare characters: Juliet; Hotspur; Beatrice & Benedick; a few jazzy pieces : London Bridge Rag; We gotta Boogie; My favourite Time of day; and some VERY exciting encore pieces: Tango at 2 a.m., Folies d'Espagne, Rondo alla Tarantella...
