Following an apprenticeship with the town musician in Bautzen, he taught flute and piano in his home town before obtaining a post as a ‘skilled violinist’ in the city of Leipzig. In the same period he played flute (and later on violin and timpani) in the Gewandhaus orchestra. As a composer, Köhler left a wealth of flute pieces that reflect classical forms and the virtuoso performance fashions of his time. This Mazurka de Salon for flute and piano with its delightful elegiac and virtuoso passages is a character piece full of contrasts; moderate in difficulty, it represents a valuable addition to the repertoire for ambitious amateur players.Along with his younger brother Carl (1825–1900), Albert Franz Doppler (1821–1883) was one of the most celebrated flautists of the nineteenth Century. Their virtuoso duo playing was greatly admired and they captivated audiences in the musical capitals of Europe with works they had composed themselves.In 1842 the brothers were founder members of the Vienna Philharmonic orchestra. After spending some time as principal flautist at the Bucharest Opera (1835) and in the orchestra of the Hungarian National Theatre (1841), Franz Doppler decided to return to Vienna, where he worked as principal flautist and conductor at the Court opera and was appointed professor at the Conservatoire in 1865. Awarded the Franz-Joseph medal by the Kaiser in 1881, he died in Baden near Vienna in 1883.

Composers drew on songs and dances from their native lands, working them into paraphrased adaptations, pot pourri arrangements and sets of variations or incorporating folk elements from various cultures in their compositions. Flautist Wilhelm Popp (1828-1902), who wrote music for his instrument at every level of difficulty, also took up this popular trend. In this collection seven of his ‘easily playable’ compositions have been chosen with musical links to different European countries. Here again Popp shows his ability to distil the essence from musical styles and fashions of his time, setting lyrical and virtuoso passages so well for the instrument that their effectiveness far outweighs any difficulties. The popularity of his pieces for tuition purposes, school concerts or youth music competitions remains undiminished to this day. This edition is essentially based on the first printed versions of these pieces – with just a small number of printing errors and inconsistencies corrected without comment.

Naturally, apart from one opera, his oeuvre consisted mainly of pieces for the flute. In numerous fantasies on excerpts from popular operas (mainly Italian works and the operas of Meyerbeer) he married dazzling virtuosity with tunes that were popular favourites. As Wagner's music seems rather underrepresented in 19th-century popular flute music the discovery of Briccialdis 'Lohengrin' counts as a pleasant surprise, which should delight flute players and Wagner fans equally.

This Fantaisie sur des Motifs de l’Opera “Guillaume Tell� was published in the year following the first performance of the opera both by Schott in Mainz and, with insignificant discrepancies, by Troupenas in Paris (Plate number 374), the original publisher of Rossini’s last four operas. English • German.Theobald Böhm was principal flautist at the royal Isartor theatre from 1816, appointed as a member of the court orchestra in his native city Munich two years later and promoted to principal flautist there from 1830. Concert tours to several European cities established his reputation as one of the leading flute virtuosos of his time. In 1828 Böhm opened a flute manufacturing workshop and revolutionised the construction of the flute with two features: the conical ring-key flute of 1832 introduced the key system still in use today, while the acoustic refinements of the cylindrical bore flute of 1847 have hardly been improved on since then. As a composer Böhm wrote works that show off the best qualities of both flute and flautist. Plate no. 15040 / published in 1857.

Louis Drouet (1792-1873), much admired virtuoso flautist, composer, musical director and opera director, was 'a flautist of truly European standing and sphere of influence'. His method still forms part of today's standard teaching repertoire. The 'Little Sonatas' published here for the first time as a separate new edition constitute the final part of Part 3 of his method. In accordance with the remarks of Drouet who had two different performance versions in mind, the sonatas are available in two instrumentations: for two flutes and for flute and piano. The piano accompaniment, with its figured bass realized by Gottfried Bach, has been turned into a harmonic accompaniment.
