In 2020 he was awarded the Michigan Music Education Association’s Young Composers of Michigan award, as well as first prize in the University of Toledo Young Composers competition. Lenhart has also participated in numerous ensembles across Michigan, including the MYAF All-State Choir, Tecumseh Pops Orchestra, University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club and the SMTD University Choir. This jazz composition is based on the hauntingly beautiful 15th century medieval tune that is commonly used for the Advent carol O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.  I have reharmonized it with the accompaniment in a Key Signature a fifth above that of the melody.  The accompaniment, part 2, has a broken two chord ostinato throughout written as a walking bass line.  I have altered the melody, part 1, and moved much of it to the off beats.  As in period early music, I allow occassional dissonances in order to keep the ostinato.  This piece makes a wonderfully useful and unique addition to the season's repertoire.  (I have also published a version on this site with text so it can be sung by a soloist or unison choir with piano accompaniment.)  (Also as a piano solo.)range - part 1 melody - 10th, 3rd space C to high E; part 2 walking bass line, octave and a half, bass clef low A to D above middle C2 pages score, 1 page @ part,  2:05 minutes.

In the United States, Canada and the Philippines, the instrumental version of this song is traditionally associated with high school and college (university) graduation ceremonies. It is played as a processional or recessional often omitting all but the movement of the song over which the chorus is traditionally sung. During ceremonies for larger schools this piece is played repeatedly. It may be played for as long as the graduates are marching or walking, which can be longer than some symphonies.

This wonderful Sonatina is in 3 movements for the intermediate flutist.  It is a finalist for the 2022 New Voices for Young Flutists competition.  Set in the band friendly Key of B-flat major, Movement 1 is a Classical Sonata Allegro Form with an accessible flute part and a piano part that makes it BIG!   It's called 'Clockworks' because of the type of clock sounds used, especially in the piano part. The range for the flutist is Low A to High D.    Movement 2 is called 'Time for Caring.'  I wrote the melody I wanted to play.  It's lovely and makes you want to develop an even more beautiful sound.  It's range is Low F to High D with a fast scale going from Low F up to mid B-flat.   This is also in the Key of B-flat.   The 3rd Movement is also in the Key of B-flat.  I called it 'Time to Grow.'  It's rhythm is in 8/8, usually divided into 3+3+2, although there are a few measures where it is easier for the flutist to think of it in 2+2+2+2.   It has a lot of drive in the rhythm and I think has a Broadway kind of sound, as if people were moving and walking across a busy stage while singing.  I'm uploading a recording of this which I hope you enjoy!  The piano part is much more challenging.  Each of these movements is accessible, musical, interesting and when paired with the accompaniment a full ensemble kind of sound.   Enjoy!
