'Halcyon' is an expressive and tranquil piece for flute and piano and is especially well suited to the early to intermediate ability level High School music student. The word Halcyon denotes a mythical bird said by ancient writers to be able to calm the wind and waves during the winter solstice. The musical structure is simple binary and the digital sound file begins at the 23rd measure, the beginning of the second section. The compositions, arrangements and studies by Wilhelm Popp (1828-1903) are particularly popular amongst flautists today. Popp wrote more than 600 pieces at different levels of difficulty. His brilliant salon music can be easily played by intermediate flautists and to great effect.
