Here is an easy instrumental duet arrangement (for FLUTE solo with PIANO accompaniment) of the familiar Appalachian folk tune THE WATER IS WIDE (O Waly Waly). Many lyrics have been set to this famous tune, but this arrangement uses the lyrics penned by Isaac Watts titled When I Survey the Wondrous Cross.

The FLUTE plays the melody for both verses but for the second verse the FLUTE plays the melody as an echo.

The purchase price includes a combined score (grand staff, 3-stave) with both parts (FLUTE and PIANO) on each page, plus a 1-staff solo part. The range for the FLUTE solo is one octave, from G4 to G5. The piano accompaniment is at the early-intermediate level.

About the piece:
My wife and I have the best herd of equines, and no, I am not biased. Spending time with them in their pasture during the spring when everything is blooming is like entering a magical wonderland away from the stresses of daily life. Our miniature horse, Harley (affectionately called Harley Moon), loves frolicking in the tall grass and flowers in the pasture. Harley Moon’s Spring is inspired by his daily frolic.

About the composer:
Michael Davis is an educator, performer, and composer specializing in classical saxophone. They earned saxophone performance degrees from the University of Iowa (BM) and the University of North Texas (MM, DMA). They are committed to collaborating with and promoting people from historically underrepresented groups, with a particular focus on LGBTQ individuals.

This arrangement starts quietly and the piano accompaniment has a tender line that weaves into the verse breaks.   Verse one and verse two do not do the chorus.  We wait for it- and then FINALLY when we get to the third verse we get to play the 'He Lives!' chorus.  And the flute simply states that up high on beautiful third register G while the piano finishes the phrase.  It's a touching way to testify.

The flute part dips down to low e, but to really play this well you need to be able to play a gorgeous high g.  That's the note on which you spin a beautiful vibrato.

You'll need a really good pianist.
