DUET IN 3 MOVEMENTS  (Andante, Allegro and Allegretto) by C.P.E. BACH for flute and violin or two flutes. Written in 1748 when Bach was working at the court of Frederic the Great of Prussia. It was clearly intended to be played by Frederic - a very talented flute player with either Bach playing the violin part or Frederic's flute teacher, Quantz playing the second part on the flute. Between them Bach and Quantz wrote a great many sonatas, concertos and other chamber music for the flute for Frederic to perform.
The Duetto is well within the ability of players of about grade 6 ABRSM and is also suitable for pairs of oboes or clarinets. The violin/ flute 2 part has been transposed for clarinet in Bb which makes it suitable for many duet combinations.

The three movements, Allegro, Larghetto & Presto, were written for two equal players - the originals being Quantz, the teacher and King Frederick (the great) of Prussia.

Players of intermediate standard will enjoy the interplay between the parts.

The Jellybean Jive is one in a series of ten Easter-themed duets each written in a different American dance style. Jive originally referred to African American slang in the 1930s when Big Band Swing was the popular music of the time. The Second World War brought Swing and Lindy Hop dancing to the UK and British audiences preferred to call it Jive.

Shall We Gather at The River is an American nineteenth century hymn often sung in a gospel style. This version is arranged as a duet for one Flute and one Violin.

Shall We Gather at The River was composed in 1865 by a Baptist minister from New York, Robert Lowry. As well as becoming a gospel standard, the melody of Shall We Gather at The River has found its way into compositions by Charles Ives and Aaron Copeland and has often been used in classic Western movies.

Shall We Gather at The River is simply arranged in keys and range best suited to the instruments. The hymn is played three times in a slow swing style, with a key change on the final verse and chorus. The Trumpet Tune and Air was in fact written for organ, with the melody played on thetrumpet stop.  Written around 1700, for many years this piece was attributed to Henry Purcell. But more recently many have questioned whether the composer was in fact Jeremiah Clarke, organist at St Paul’s Cathedral. What is known is that the piece was written for a semi-opera called The Island Princess, and that both men contributed music to the production. In recent years this piece has become a popular wedding favourite.

 This full version is arranged as a duet for Flute and Violin and the performance time is around two and a half minutes. Of course, performers, especially at weddings, may wish to abridge and shorten the arrangement. This is easily done as the different sections are self-contained and the repeat may be ignored. The short sample here and the full length version on the youtube link are from the Clarinet and Alto Saxophone version of this arrangement.

Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. There are of course separate piano and instrumental parts included in downloaded the file.

Teachers will enjoy using this arrangement as a fun way to help with strict time, full tone and dynamic contrast.
