Originally sung unaccompanied in the Irish Gaelic language, in more recent times the melodies have been adapted as instrumentals, harmonised and given accompaniment. The songs are most often about love and loss and Grá aims to capture this melancholy mood.Grá is written for players at an intermediate standard and upwards. Expressive throughout, the first part of the melody is played above a drone. Simple accompaniment then builds towards a climax before the melody slips away like a distant echo. Players can add their own appropriate ornaments and variations to the melody if they wish. Grá has a performance time of a little over three minutes. An Irish flute solo I wrote for my Grandfather's funeral.  It starts off pensive and sentimental, to reflect the sorrow of losing a loved one, but then takes on an exuberant feel to celebrate a life well lived.  There are two pages - page 2 is in D Minor for classical C flute and other C instruments (to match the recording), while the first page is in E Minor for Irish flute or tinwhistle in D.  The overall range is just over 2 octaves:  C4 (middle C) to D6 for C flute or D4 to E6 for D flutes.  It also plays well on violin.

This version is arranged as a duet in a Jazz Swing style for one Flute and one Violin. The origins of the lyrics are less certain. Throughout the nineteenth century they were attributed to Martin Luther, but this version of events has since been discredited. With a performance time of around two and a half minutes, this version of Away in a Manger is perfect for seasonal celebrations and concert performances, both formal and informal. The jazz swing style is a fun and fresh take on this familiar traditional tune.Away in a Manger is arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. The original 3/4 meter has been altered to 4/4. Rhythms are syncopated, as one would expect in swing music, and there is plenty of articulation detail to help deliver an authentic style. The melody is played twice, with intros and outros. This arrangement is suitable for players at an intermediate or early advanced level.
