This is the first of a set of six 'Sonatas or Duets' for two German flutes composed for the Temple of Apollo published in London around 1750. The three movements, Andante and two Allegros provide some innovative harmonies and rhythms and provide an entertaining challenge for players of intermediate standard and above. The Sonata is also suitable for violins or oboes.

Three sonatas from Opus 1 - number 2 in E minor (Andante, Allegro & Minuet - Grazioso); number 4 in G Major (Andantino, Allegro & Minuet - Grazioso) & number 5 in C Major (Andante, Andante - Adagio & Minuet). These three from the set of six have been published together because they are less complicated than the rest of the set and lend themselves to the format of the playing score. They are fun to play and should provide enjoyable sight reading and ensemble practice for players of intermediate standard.
The sonatas are also suitable for violins.

Samba de Simão is an exciting original composition by David McKeown, arranged as a duet for one Flute and one Violin.

This duet is based on the style of Samba. With roots in West African music, modern Samba emerged in Rio de Janiero, Brazil at the beginning of the twentieth century. There are many forms, both sung and instrumental, and the Samba rhythm has found its way around the world into jazz and modern electronic pop and dance music. Samba has become a cultural symbol of Brazil, with Rio’s famous Samba schools producing theatrical and ultra-professional showpieces for the annual carnival.

If you play to an advanced intermediate standard and upwards, then you and your audience will enjoy this piece. Rhythms should be lightly articulated, the melody should always flow, the two underlying strong beats in each bar should always be felt, and following the articulation in the score will help convey the style. Each piece explores a different style and flavour of Latin music, from the Rumbas, Salsas and Mambos of Cuba, to the Sambas and Bossas of Brazil, and on to the Calypsos and Merengues of the Caribbean. Mexico is represented by the Huapango, Venezuela and Colombia by the Joropo, and Argentina and Uruguay by the Tango.

Most of these duets are ideal for players of an Intermediate standard, with two or three more suitable for Advanced Intermediate. Felix Mendelssohn’s Wedding March was originally written in 1842 as incidental music to Shakespeare’s famousplay, Midsummer Night’s Dream. When Queen Victoria’s daughter used the music for her marriage in 1858, it became instantly popular and has remained a wedding favourite ever since.

This full version is arranged as a duet for Flute and Violin and the performance time is around 6 minutes. Of course, performers, especially at weddings, may wish to abridge and shorten the arrangement. This is easily done as the different sections are self-contained and interchangeable. Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances, with both parts enjoying melodic interest.

White Christmas is one of the best loved of all Christmas songs. While sung by countless artists over the years, it is synonymous with its original performer, Bing Crosby, who nailed the original recording with orchestra and singers in under eighteen minutes. Written by Irving Berlin in 1941, the song reached its audience via the 1942 movie bearing the same name. This version, arranged as a duet for one Flute and one Violin, is true to the original in structure and feel. There are two verses, one reflecting Crosby’s free phrasing, and the second, copying the stricter phrasing of the singers and orchestra.

Musicians at an intermediate standard will find this ideal for formal and informal Christmas performances, with both parts enjoying plenty of interest. There are a few moderately difficult rhythms and some less familiar accidentals. Total performance time is around three minutes. The short audio sample is from the Clarinet and Alto Saxophone version while the full-length performance on the youtube link is the Clarinet Duet.

Teachers will enjoy using this arrangement as a fun way to approach expressive playing.
