ATON is a stage play written by Manfred Strolz and Otmar Rützler which represents Egypt in the time of the Pharoahs but seen through the eyes of modern theatre directors and actors. The modern scenes are spoken but the Egyptian scenes require music, so Manfred and Otmar asked me to write the music for these. The music is composed for various forces as the play progresses, from the full orchestra (woodwind, strings, harp, piano, timpani) and choir down to more intimate moments with single voice or duets, flute and classical guitar or with single voice and bassoon. For each section the pdf file contains score and parts and the sound sample is an electronic preview. As I write 16 sections have been composed, but more are to come - please just search for Aton in due course for the full picture. The first performance is planned to take place in the Landestheater in Innsbruck during 2015 ================= ATON ist ein Bühnenstück von Manfred Strolz and Otmar Rützler geschrieben, das Ägypten von der Pharaonenzeit vorstellt aber auch duch die Augen moderner Direktoren und Schauspieler sieht. Die modernen Szenen sind gesprochen aber die ägyptischen Szenen brauchen Musik, deshalb haben mich Manfred und Otmar gebeten die Musik dafür zu schreiben. Die Musik ist für verschiedene Kräfte während des Stückes komponiert: vom vollen Orchester (Holzbläser, Streicher, Harfe, Klavier, Timpani) und Chor bis zu intimeren Augenblicken mit Solostimme (oder Duetten) mit Flöte und klassicher Gitarre oder Solostimme mit Fagott. Im Augenblick gibt es 16 Kompositionen, aber es wird noch mehr geben - bitte suche später nach Aton für das vollständige Bild. Für jede Komposition enhält die pdf-Datei Partitur und Stimmen und die mp3-Datei ist eine elektronische Vorschau. Es wird geplant, die erste Aufführung im Landestheater Innsbruck im Jahre 2015 stattzuhalten.

I am so happy that smoking in enclosed public places is now illegal in the UK and in many other countries, but this song was written in the 1980s when people had to breath the pollution created by inconsiderate smokers, and, of course, there are still countries where this is the case. So I decided to publish the song even though the battle is thankfully won here. The sound sample is my own performance with some additional (un-notated) improvisations on cello and vibraphone. The pdf file contains the score and parts.  The music has also been arranged as an instrumental duo called Laid back bounce, also available on this site.  I went out this morning along the way to work  when without warning I was faced with clouds of murk  refrain: Sing Down with the smokers who infect the air with clouds hate their unthinking uncaring unblinking hate the stinking coughing crowds!  I went down to the station and was waiting for my train  but to my irritation the stinkers were there again.  [refrain]  Wouldn't it be pleasant to enjoy a drink in a theatre bar discussing the play  or wouldn't it be jolly just to sing along with pals in a cozy pub along the way  or wouldn't it be nice to go any where and not have to share with every breath some secondhand smoke and firsthand death.  [refrain]  I was eating my fav'rite curry but the air was getting thick and I felt I had to hurry because the smokers made me feel sick  [refrain]  It's fine bright hot and sunny and I'd love to have a drink  but why spend time and money where the smokers sit and stink?  [refrain]  Wouldn't it be pleasant just to pass the time at a social do or a meeting hall  or wouldn't it be jolly to dance the night away with the one you love at a disco or ball  wouldn't it be nice to go any where and not have to share with every breath some secondhand smoke and firsthand death  [refrain].

Song for alto and guitar based on the poem by Bluma Finkelstein I was introduced to the poem back in 1977 in Strasbourg by a mutual friend, when Bluma was at the University there, and it became one of my first impressionist songs. Her writing deals with a wide range of subjects including environmental issues and the difficult topic of mental illness. Her poetry can be sad, witty, angry and above all full of her strength of spirit. In fact, she has been described as 'the poet laureate of the survivors movement'. The poems are as follows: The clocks move tonight. Nothing moves but the clocks. The Universe stays the same. Then why does darkness drag in early? Why the days go damp and dreary? Like an unkind remark turning beauty to hurt, the wind ransacks the pink blossom. A new tree starting out managed the first inch up and the first inch down; it was not to be the minority who make maturity. A leaf clings with all it has to the tree: Falling is painless.
