Recuerdos de mi tierra - Dúo para ClarinetesEsta pieza evoca recuerdos de los años 90 cuando formaba parte de la Banda BASTLAM en la comunidad Mixe de Tlahuitoltepec, Oaxaca, México. Practicábamos el estilo Zapateado-Vals con solos y acompañamiento de banda. Cada instrumento tenía solos y tuttis únicos. En ese entonces, era innovador tocar como solista en un pueblo rico en cultura pero aislado y con limitado acceso a información y conocimientos formales de música. Prácticamente no existían bandas infantiles ni juveniles, por lo que la creación de la Banda Infantil-Juvenil-Bastlam fue uno de los primeros grandes proyectos impulsados por las autoridades municipales. Posteriormente, adoptaron el proyecto y continuaron formando bandas infantiles escalonadamente en dicha comunidad replicándose en otros pueblos y regiones de Oaxaca. El origen del zapateado es incierto. Se cree que proviene de las sevillanas, fandanguillos, bulerías y peteneras españolas, las cuales se fusionaron con elementos africanos. Sin embargo, fue en México donde este tipo de zapateado instrumental se arraigó y enriqueció en las bandas filarmónicas tradicionales de los pueblos oaxaqueños. El zapateado representa una fusión global entre culturas y sus representaciones. No existe ningún baile o forma musical completamente puro; todos son producto de mestizajes.

Jessel later published it for orchestra in 1905, as Opus 123. Today, it is also a popular tune for marching bands, concert bands, and small orchestras, and for extremely diverse alternate instrumentations as well.Since the early 1920s, the piece has been very popular in the U.S., and has also been frequently performed and recorded worldwide. Composed around 1720, these pieces were part of Bach's Klavierbüchlein, a collection of 62 short works for keyboard compiled for his nine-year-old son, Wilhelm Friedemann Bach. The Inventions were designed as exercises to teach two-part playing, familiarize students with musical ideas, and provide a taste of composition. They were structured with care, with the first three based on scales, the following three on broken chords, and a combination of both in the final piece, almost resembling a fugue in form. I have greatly abridged and simplified the piece into a 2 part instrumental duet without losing any of the character of the Romantic piece. I have arranged themes from each of the three sections, keeping the original structure, but taking liberties such as changing phrasing, dynamics, adding my own markings, and even changing the Time Signature in certain passages. I begin with each instrument taking solo turns on the melody and end with a similar cadenza style set of solos for each instrument. The two parts are of equal importance and much of the character is in the interplay between the two instruments. This is a beautiful concert arrangement of a beloved classic.
