Kandel’s Hora is a Jewish dance tune, often performed by Klezmer musicians. This version is arranged as a duet for one Clarinet and one Bass Clarinet.

Kandel’s Hora was written and named after Harry Kandel. Born in Lvov, and after a short period in the Russian army, Kandel emigrated to the USA in 1905 and quickly found work as a clarinettist in vaudeville, Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show and JP Sousa’s band. A brief but productive period as band-leader and recording artist followed, after which Kandel retired from performing to run a music shop.

Kandel’s Hora is arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. A slow Hora in triple meter is followed by a faster Freylach version of the same melody in 4. Kandel’s Hora is suitable for players at an advanced intermediate level and above. The lyrics of Joy to the World were composed by Isaac Watts in 1719, while the most popular melody associated with the carol was composed by Lowell Mason in 1843. Mason was an admirer of G.F. Handel and the similarity of the melody to parts of the Messiah have been pointed out by many commentators.
