Eleanor Rigby first appeared on the Beatles’ 1966 album, Revolver. There has been much speculation over the identity of Eleanor Rigby, and a gravestone bearing that name has been discovered close to where Paul McCartney grew up in Liverpool. But Paul McCartney insists that he chose the natural-sounding name as a combination of a friend’s name and a shop he noticed in Bristol. Indeed, the original working title of the song was Miss Daisy Hawkins.

She’s Leaving Home first appeared on the Beatles’ 1967 album, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. The song was jointly written and performed by Paul McCartney and John Lennon. George Harrison and Ringo Starr took no part in the recording and there were no instrumental contributions by any of the Beatles. The song was inspired by a newspaper story about a missing teenage girl. The girl in question turned up safe and sound eventually, and had, by complete coincidence, met the Beatles at a TV recording a few year’s earlier.

The recording of Yellow Submarine included numerous sound effects and backing vocals from everyone from Marianne Faithful to Brian Jones. There has been much speculation as to what the lyrics of Yellow Submarine might mean, but Lennon and McCartney insisted it was just a nonsense rhyme for children.
