There are nine 8-bar sections in this theme and variations. I categorize it as Contemporary Classical because it fuses Classical, Baroque, Romantic, chromaticism, and lots of early jazz, all with a strong and vigorous Russian folk dance beat. Practicing your technique has never been so much fun; from mordents to syncopation with lots of varying articulation including staccato, slur, accents, and tenutos.

I have greatly abridged and simplified the piece into a 2 part instrumental duet without losing any of the character of the Romantic piece. I have arranged themes from each of the three sections, keeping the original structure, but taking liberties such as changing phrasing, dynamics, adding my own markings, and even changing the Time Signature in certain passages. I begin with each instrument taking solo turns on the melody and end with a similar cadenza style set of solos for each instrument. The two parts are of equal importance and much of the character is in the interplay between the two instruments. This is a beautiful concert arrangement of a beloved classic.

It turns out that the elixir was fake (just red wine), but it caused the two persons to realize that their love had always been real. My arrangement maintains this joyful, almost comedic, side of love's feelings. Following Ludovic's earlier piano arrangement I treat just three of the opera's many themes. I have altered and enriched some of the simplistic classical chord progressions. There are now numerous markings throughout, particularly in articulation. Each part requires accurate rhythms, and each part has some virtuosic extended patterned runs. The range for each instrument is wide-2 octaves plus a third. This piece is a fun way to show your technical skills in concert or audition/competition. Or useful anyplace that you want joyful melodrama (Donizetti's own description). Also works well for pre-wedding music if you prefer the humorous side of true love instead of the sappy stuff.

Climb Ev'ry Mountain, from the stage musical The Sound of Music, is a favorite repertoire standard. This instrumental duet arrangement is written in an expressive way which allows that beautiful melody to soar with some gentle reharmonizations to freshen it. The lower instrument has a walking bass line accompaniment initially, then takes over the melody while the upper instrument has a running flourish. Both parts dramatically cover a full range of 2 1/2 octaves. Unlike many arrangements of this piece which go for bombast, I keep it gentle and quiet with the interest being in the subtle expressive interplay of the two parts. A Siciliano is based on a graceful rustic dance of Sicily, and is considered a type of Pastorale.  The Siciliano style always has dotted rhythms.  It is normally in compound time, but I have changed it here to make it more accessible for beginners.  This arrangement is based on the opening theme from Voluntary II for Organ by John Alcock, Jr.  Mr. Alcock was an organist from the Classical Period and this piece is a great example of the Classical characteristics with a lyrical melody of light elegance.The two parts, which each stay within the range of 1 octave, are equally balanced, playing in parallel thirds much of the time, and the rest of the time playing off of each other in tight ensemble work.  This makes a great recital piece to develop your melodic tone and showcase the melodies of the Classical Period.  (1 page score, 1 page @ part, with repeats - 2 1/2 minutes).

Then an Andante Espressivo section as the victorious player pauses to admire the beauty of the striped marble he has just won. Then Round 2 in the dominant key and another striped marble in the bag. A Recapitulation and a Picardy Third conclude the game with satisfaction.  The notes and rhythms are quite easy. (Some might find a slight challenge in the 1 1/2 octave range or the quick tempo).   The interest comes from the contrasting sections; energy vs espressivo, vivace vs andante, detached vs slurred.  This piece is fun to play and very showy for concert.84 bars; 2 minutes; 3 page score; 2 page partTemporary recording of piano reduction of score.
