Steal Away to Jesus is an American nineteenth century spiritual. This version is arranged as a duet for one Soprano and one Alto Saxophone.
The words and music of Steal Away to Jesus are credited to Wallis Willis, a Native American freedman from Oklahoma. A local minister transcribed the song and within a few years it became a firm gospel favourite. The words have a meaning beyond the spiritual, with hidden references to the Underground Railway of the time that helped escaped slaves cross to Canada. In more recent times Steal Away to Jesus was arranged by Michael Tippett in 1944 and recorded famously by Mahalia Jackson and Nat King Cole.
Steal Away to Jesus is simply arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. The song is played several times as a ballad, with ever changing accompaniment. Click the link above to listen to a full Youtube performance of the Clarinet version of this duet.
Steal Away to Jesus is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above. With a performance time of around three and a half minutes, this version of Steal Away to Jesus is perfect for worship and concert performances, both formal and informal.
