Voi Che Sapete is an aria from the second act of W A Mozart’s comic opera, The Marriage of Figaro. It has become one of Mozart’s best loved melodies and features the servant Cherubino singing excitedly about his experience of first love. This version is arranged as a duet for one Flute and one Clarinet.

Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances, with both parts enjoying melodic interest. The duet format gives solo instrumentalists an opportunity to play music written for the voice. The overall performance time is a little over two minutes. These lovely duets have been expertly arranged and are great for last minute festive performances....whether in church, or at a family gathering, with a friend or a colleague and can usually be performed with fairly little rehearsal time. 

There are seven well known Christmas Carols in the collection: O Little Town of Bethlehem, Hark the Herald Angels Sing, Coventry Carol, See Amid the Winter's Snow, O Come O Come Emmanuel, In Dulci Jubilo, and Ding Dong Merrily on High, and the difficulty levels vary between grade 2-5.

Merengue de Merlín is an exciting original composition by David McKeown, arranged as a duet for one Flute and one Clarinet.

This duet is based on the traditional Latin style of Merengue that emerged in the Dominican Republic during the Nineteenth Century. Merengue Tipico bands maintain the traditional instrumentation of the double-headed tambora drum, güira, accordion and vocal, while urban bands in the North American diaspora often add saxophone, bass and other percussion. The Merengue dance became hugely popular in the 1950s and new forms continue to draw audiences around the world.

If you play to an intermediate standard and upwards, then you and your audience will enjoy this piece. The steady quintilla tambora rhythm is present throughout, and following the precise articulation in the score will help convey the style. The main challenge is the fast tempo and melodies should be clearly articulated. Merengue de Merlín has a performance time of around two and a half minutes at full tempo. Ave Maria was written by Franz Schubert in 1825 as the sixth song in his song cycle based on Walter Scott’s poem The Lady of the Lake. It is perhaps the best known of all his melodies, adapted for piano by Franz Liszt, and for orchestra many times since. It is often sung with the Latin lyrics of the Catholic hymn of the same name and has been heard everywhere from the Disney movie Fantasia to the funeral of J.F. Kennedy. This version is arranged as a duet for one Flute and one Clarinet.

Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. Both parts play the melody. The overall performance time is around four and a half minutes. The most popular of Scott Joplin’s piano rags during his lifetime, The Maple Leaf Rag was published in 1899. Joplin lived for a while in Sedalia, Missouri and the Maple Leaf Club in that town is thought to have provided the name for this composition. It provided Joplin with a steady income for the rest of his life, and while he requested that it be played at his funeral, his wife refused as she felt it inappropriate. It was the first track on Joshua Rifkin’s famous 1970 revival recording of Joplin’s music and, never waning in popularity, it has featured in hundreds of films.

This version for Flute and Clarinet Duet includes all four sections of the original composition. The tempo in recorded versions varies widely between 72 and 126, so the marking of 92 is a suggestion only. The linked youtube performance is the Alto Saxophone version of this duet and the repeats are omitted for brevity.

One for Larry (2019) for flute, clarinet, and live electronics was composed in memory of noted Avant-Garde composer  Larry Austin, Professor Emeritus at  the University of North Texas. Mr. Austin was noted for his electronic and  computer music works. Austin had important associations with John Cage,  Karlheinz Stockhausen, Leonard Bernstein and others. Larry Austin died on December 30, 2018.
