Instrumental Duet Clarinet,Flute,Instrumental Duet - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.956624 Composed by Antonin Dvorak. Arranged by Catriona Melville-Mason. Concert,Romantic Period,Standards. Score and parts. 7 pages. C Melville-Mason #6482647. Published by C Melville-Mason (A0.956624). The flashy, up-beat nature of this piece makes it ideal as the closing item or encore in a short recital programme.  Played up to speed, Slavonic Dance Op. 46/3 requires accurate finger-work and smooth transitions between registers, as well as sensitivity to the relationship between the two parts - hence its classification as 'advanced intermediate'.  Slavonic Dances Op 46, written in 1878, was something of a breakthrough work for Czech composer Antonin Dvorak, finally establishing his reputation well beyond his native land.  The dances are original melodies, inspired by, and drawing on, the character of traditional national dances, rather than works based on existing folk tunes, as was the fashion among composers at around that time.  These Slavonic Dances were originally written for piano 4 hands but, at his publisher’s request, Dvorak produced orchestrated versions shortly thereafter.  The pieces proved so popular that Dvorak composed a second set, Op. 72, in 1886. Op. 46, No. 3 is in the form of the polka, a dance which originated in Bohemia.

Instrumental Duet Clarinet,Flute,Instrumental Duet - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.956620 Composed by Traditional Irish. Arranged by Catriona Melville-Mason. Celtic,Concert,Contemporary,Standards. Score and parts. 5 pages. C Melville-Mason #6481193. Published by C Melville-Mason (A0.956620). This melody is described as traditional, as it is essentially an old Irish air.  The lyrics of The Minstrel Boy were set to the tune by Thomas Moore (1779 – 1852), apparently in memory of friends who lost their lives in the Irish Rebellion of 1798. The tune is frequently performed in remembrance contexts, particularly those involving persons of Irish ancestry.  In the UK, it is played annually at the National Service of Remembrance at the Cenotaph in London.  The Minstrel Boy also featured during the procession to Westminster Abbey at the funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother in April 2002, reflecting her long association with the men of the Irish Regiment.  In the USA, police and fire departments historically included a high proportion of Irish-Americans, so it became traditional for The Minstrel Boy to be performed at the funerals of service members killed in the line of duty.

Instrumental Duet Clarinet,Flute,Instrumental Duet - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.956622 Composed by Johann Strauss Jr. and Josef Strauss. Arranged by Catriona Melville-Mason. Concert,Romantic Period,Standards. Score and parts. 7 pages. C Melville-Mason #6481197. Published by C Melville-Mason (A0.956622). A fun piece for performance or general repertoire!  Played up to tempo, this piece requires nimble finger-work as well as sensitivity to the relationship between the parts, hence its classification as 'advanced intermediate'.The Pizzicato Polka was written in 1869 by brothers Josef and Johann Strauss (Jr), originally for plucked strings and glockenspiel.  The polka is a lively dance in 2/4 time which originated in Bohemia but spread rapidly throughout Europe and beyond.  The name is believed to derive from pulka, the Bohemian term for half-step, which describes the rapid shifts in weight from one foot to another. For dancing, a polka should be played at a consistent tempo but concert performances of the Pizzicato Polka traditionally involve significant rubato.  Here, the decision is largely left up to the performers.

Instrumental Duet Clarinet,Flute,Instrumental Duet - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.956618 Composed by C W Gluck. Arranged by Catriona Melville-Mason. Classical,Concert,Standards. Score and parts. 4 pages. C Melville-Mason #6481187. Published by C Melville-Mason (A0.956618). This is a lament from Christoph Willibald Gluck’s opera Orfeo ed Euridice, first performed in Vienna in October 1762.  Orfeo has been permitted to bring his wife back from the underworld, provided he does not look at her during the return journey.  He fails to meet this stipulation, turning to see her face, and so she dies.  Grief-stricken, Orfeo asks what he will do without her. Some critics deem this music too light in character for a true lament, while others argue that its simplicity reflects a grief too deep for more complex expression.A charming addition to general repertoire, this piece rewards sensitive and expressive playing.

Instrumental Duet Clarinet,Flute,Instrumental Duet - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.956621 Composed by J Strauss II. Arranged by Catriona Melville-Mason. Concert,Romantic Period,Standards. Score and parts. 7 pages. C Melville-Mason #6481195. Published by C Melville-Mason (A0.956621). An intermediate-level arrangement of a Strauss march, for mixed woodwind duet of flute and clarinet in B-flat.In his lifetime, Austrian composer Johann Strauss II (1825 – 1899) was dubbed ‘The Waltz King’, reflecting his prolific output of this type of dance music.  He also composed polkas, quadrilles, marches, operettas and a ballet. During the 1848 upheavals in the Austrian Empire, Johann II opted to side with the revolutionaries.  This allegiance had an adverse effect on his career, as well as deepening the rift between him and his father, so in due course Johann wrote several marches with titles that might encourage the establishment to forget his past pro-revolutionary sympathies. The Ottinger Reiter-Marsch was first published in 1850.  Strauss claimed that the work had been commissioned for a regiment who specifically requested the dedication to General Franz von Ottinger.  At the time, Ottinger was not very popular, largely because of his punitive attitude towards former revolutionaries.

Instrumental Duet Clarinet,Flute,Instrumental Duet - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.956619 Composed by Nathaniel Gow. Arranged by Catriona Melville-Mason. Celtic,Concert,Standards. Score and parts. 5 pages. C Melville-Mason #6481189. Published by C Melville-Mason (A0.956619). Loch Earn is a reel written by composer, performer and music publisher Nathaniel Gow (1763 – 1831), fourth son of acclaimed Perthshire fiddler Niel Gow.  This piece is classed as 'intermediate' but, to increase the difficulty, play it faster! Loch Earn itself is a Scottish fresh water loch, approximately six and a half miles long, which lies within the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park.  The area around the loch is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including kingfishers, osprey, red kites, red deer, mountain hare and wild goats.  Loch Earn is used extensively for fishing and assorted water-sports activities.

Instrumental Duet Clarinet,Flute,Instrumental Duet - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.956616 Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Arranged by Catriona Melville-Mason. Concert,Standards. Score and parts. 6 pages. C Melville-Mason #6481183. Published by C Melville-Mason (A0.956616). This is the first movement of a //Sonatina in F// for piano, attributed to Beethoven – although scholars now doubt that he was indeed the composer.  A Sonatina tends to be a shorter, less demanding version of a sonata, usually fairly light-hearted in character.  Those who have at some time or another taken piano lessons will probably be familiar with this piece! This version, for duo of flute and clarinet in B-flat, is tricky to manage smoothly at speed, hence its classification as 'advanced intermediate'.

Instrumental Duet Clarinet,Flute,Instrumental Duet - Digital Download SKU: A0.956617 Composed by J Offenbach. Arranged by Catriona Melville-Mason. Concert,Romantic Period,Standards. Score and parts. 5 pages. C Melville-Mason #6481185. Published by C Melville-Mason (A0.956617). This well-known tune is fun to play and makes an ideal encore to a short recital.  To increase the difficulty, go faster!Officially entitled ‘Galop Infernale’, this piece hails from Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld, first performed in October 1858.  Offenbach’s comic opera is a humorous take on Gluck’s highly successful Orpheus and Euridice. During a scene in which the gods are socialising, Jupiter suggests dancing a minuet.  The other gods decide this is far too staid, calling for something with a livelier, party-feel – and the Galop Infernale follows.  The tune’s association with the high-kicking Can Can dance came later, some 50 years after Offenbach’s death, when the French cabaret venues Moulin Rouge and Folies Bergère appropriated the piece for use in this context.
