Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree was written in 1958 by Johnny Marks and was a big hit for 13 year old Brenda Lee. It remains the biggest hit of her career with 25 million sales and a seasonal return to the charts every year. This version is faithful to the swinging rock’n’roll style of the original and includes a simple transcription of Boots Randolph’s famous sax solo. It is arranged as a duet for two Violas. 

Musicians at an early intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal Christmas performances. There are some simple syncopated swing rhythms and a few accidentals accidentals. The overall performance time is around two and a half minutes. She’s Leaving Home first appeared on the Beatles’ 1967 album, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. The song was jointly written and performed by Paul McCartney and John Lennon. George Harrison and Ringo Starr took no part in the recording and there were no instrumental contributions by any of the Beatles. The song was inspired by a newspaper story about a missing teenage girl. The girl in question turned up safe and sound eventually, and had, by complete coincidence, met the Beatles at a TV recording a few year’s earlier.

When I’m Sixty-Four first appeared on the Beatles’ 1967 album, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Despite the song’s appearance relatively late in the Beatles’ discography, it was one of the first songs that Paul McCartney wrote, at the age of 16. When the song was finally recorded in 1966, Paul McCartney felt it was too slow and turgid. George Martin simply solved the problem by speeding up the tape and raising the pitch by one semitone.
