Its roots date back to before the American Civil War, though it was first published in 1918 in Plantation Melodies: A Collection of Modern, Popular and Old-time Negro-Songs of the Southland, Chicago, the Rodeheaver Company. The song has alternatively been known as Ain' go'n' to study war no mo', Ain't Gwine to Study War No More, Down by de Ribberside, Going to Pull My War-Clothes and Study war no more  This arrangement is very ideal for school concerts. Jazz à Challans (Jazz at Challans) was written for my students during a one year residency when I replaced the recorder teacher at the conservatory of music in Challans, France. This piece was intended to be the student's first introduction to the world of jazz and the idea was to give them a piece requiring the 'swing' style along with some jazz improvisation using pitches found in one of the pentatonic scales. A flatted fifth is also included in the melodic line. I have included versions for both C (soprano) & F (alto) recorders. Although I imagine players would choose one or the other of the versions, it could also be fun to play the two versions together for a different kind of harmonic sound.
