Josquin des Prez (1450-1521) was a French-Flemish composer who lived during the Renaissance period. His chamber music was influential in the development of modern tonality and musical genres. Josquin's compositions encompassed both secular and sacred works, including chansons and Italian frottola. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest composers of the Renaissance and was among the first to use innovations such as multiple voices and counterpoint. His achievements as a musical magician-mathematician remain stunning even centuries after his death. The importance of Josquin des Prez's chamber music lies in its influence on the development of modern music and its enduring legacy as a masterpiece of the Renaissance period.

Scott Joplin is celebrated as the United States’ first well-known black composer, making his name as a writer of piano rags. His life was a constant struggle with adversity, and Joplin died relatively young in 1917, at the dawn of the recording age. Few remembered Joplin’s music until a revival in the 1970s brought The Entertainer and others to the world’s attention. Nowadays Scott Joplin has taken his rightful place in the gallery of great American composers.

The duets included in this collection are, The Entertainer, The Maple Leaf Rag, The Easy Winners, The Elite Syncopations and The Favorite.

They have been arranged as duets for two Oboes and include all sections of the original compositions. The YouTube link showcases the clarinet version of these duets. The origins of When the Saints Go Marching In are unclear, though it was first recorded in 1923. A later instrumental recording by Louis Armstrong affirmed the song’s status as a jazz standard and created an ongoing association with the city of  New Orleans. When the Saints Go Marching In was later performed by artists as diverse as Elvis Presley, Bing Crosby and Chuck Berry

This version of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is arranged by David McKeown as a duet for two Oboes.

The song, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, was written in 1949 by Johhny Marks. The Rudolph story was written by Marks’ brother-in-law, Robert L May, a decade earlier. The success of the song was guaranteed when it was recorded by Gene Autry, a huge star at the time. Initially Gene Autry didn’t like the song and was only persuaded to record it by his wife. She obviously knew best as Rudolph went on to become the second best-selling Christmas record of all time after White Christmas, with versions by everyone from the Jackson Five to Alvin and the Chipmunks.

This duet version of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is based on the Gene Autry version, with a short introduction, and three choruses of the melody, with a key change and varied accompaniment throughout. Rhythms are simple in a swing style and the range is conservative, so this arrangement is ideal for players at an intermediate level. Tu del ciel ministro eletto is a beautiful and serene aria from Handel’s Oratorio Il trionfo del Tempo. The oratorio premiered in Rome in 1707, but Handel twice revised it later in his career. In this aria Beauty turns her back on pleasure and dedicates her heart to the Elected Minister of Heaven. The soprano voice and solo violin are in constant dialogue throughout.

This version of Tu del ciel ministro eletto is arranged as a Duet for two Oboes and Piano. The piano part is straightforward, but the oboe parts will set challenges for control, breathing and tuning. The Elite Syncopations was one of many solo piano rags written by Scott Joplin in the wake of his success with Maple Leaf Rag. Published in 1903, The Elite Syncopations followed the classic four part structure that Joplin had developed with earlier compositions. In 1974 the Royal Ballet in London produced a ballet based on ragtime music using The Elite Syncopations as both the title and main theme.

National religious conventions in the 1930s gave the hymn a wider audience.
