Giuseppe Sammartini was an Italian composer, oboist, and organist who lived during the Baroque era. He is credited with helping to establish the form of the modern concerto grosso, which would become an important part of the development of classical chamber music. Sammartini wrote many solo and chamber pieces, including sonatas, trios, and concertos. His style is considered to be very graceful and expressive, and his works often contain virtuosic passages.


Sammartini's influence on the history of classical chamber music is significant. His compositions demonstrate the shift from the Baroque to the Classical style, and his works served as a bridge between the two periods. His chamber music was often praised by his contemporaries, and he was one of the first composers to use a modern concerto grosso form. Samba de Simão is an exciting original composition by David McKeown, arranged as a duet for two Oboes.

This duet is based on the style of Samba. With roots in West African music, modern Samba emerged in Rio de Janiero, Brazil at the beginning of the twentieth century. There are many forms, both sung and instrumental, and the Samba rhythm has found its way around the world into jazz and modern electronic pop and dance music. Samba has become a cultural symbol of Brazil, with Rio’s famous Samba schools producing theatrical and ultra-professional showpieces for the annual carnival.

If you play to an advanced intermediate standard and upwards, then you and your audience will enjoy this piece. Rhythms should be lightly articulated, the melody should always flow, the two underlying strong beats in each bar should always be felt, and following the articulation in the score will help convey the style. White Christmas is one of the best loved of all Christmas songs. While sung by countless artists over the years, it is synonymous with its original performer, Bing Crosby, who nailed the original recording with orchestra and singers in under eighteen minutes. Written by Irving Berlin in 1941, the song reached its audience via the 1942 movie bearing the same name. This version, arranged as a duet for two Oboes, is true to the original in structure and feel. There are two verses, one reflecting Crosby’s free phrasing, and the second, copying the stricter phrasing of the singers and orchestra.

Musicians at an intermediate standard will find this ideal for formal and informal Christmas performances, with both parts enjoying plenty of interest. There are a few moderately difficult rhythms and some less familiar accidentals. Total performance time is around three minutes. The short audio sample is from the Clarinet and Alto Saxophone version while the full-length performance on the youtube link is the Clarinet Duet.

Teachers will enjoy using this arrangement as a fun way to approach expressive playing.
