A Mighty Fortress Is Our God or Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott is a hymn written by Martin Luther probably before 1529. The melody was also considered his work for a long time, but it was created at least with the collaboration of Johann Walter. The song is of great symbolic power for Protestantism; where it is also known as Deus noster refugium et virtus. Considered one of the most important hymns in the history of Christianity, it was considered by the Christian poet Johann Heirich Heine (1797-1856) to be the Marseillaise of the Reformation, in an allusion to the French national anthem.

The Sun Also Dies is a vignette of tonal exploration for violin and viola. It explores the existential concept of a dying sun, in relation to our own human mortality. Though it appears to be brief in length, the hauntingly slow tempo creates an aura of sound that lasts well over five minutes. This piece focuses on sound itself, often seeming static, with only a brief moment of climax before ending in soft drone. The Sun Also Dies was composed in 2012 for Forecast Music, a North Carolina-based contemporary ensemble.

 Zoe the Zen Zombie is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above. The main melody in gentle and lyrical throughout with some accidentals, while the accompaniment has some quaver movement at a medium tempo. The range is accessible for both players. Swing Low, Sweet Chariot is an American nineteenth century spiritual. This version is arranged as a duet for one Violin and one Viola.

The words and music of Swing Low, Sweet Chariot are credited to Wallis Willis, a Native American freedman from Oklahoma. A local minister transcribed the song in 1865 and within a few years it became a firm gospel favourite. In recent times Swing Low, Sweet Chariot has been adopted by the Civil Rights movement on one hand, and the England rugby team on the other.

Swing Low, Sweet Chariot is simply arranged in keys and range best suited to the instruments. The hymn is played three and a half times, once as a ballad, then twice in a slow rock style, before returning to the ballad at the end. Brave Wolfe for viola and violin is a piece by Mark O’Connor based on an old traditional ballad. It was recorded by O’Connor and Wynton Marsalis for the album Liberty!. The recording was also used throughout the film documentary produced for PBS, Liberty! The American Revolution. This may very well be the first duet ever written for trumpet and violin. Summarized as a triumph by album notes writer Thomas Fleming, he goes on to characterize the duet by saying Marsalis’ sound echoes the noble sadness of this celebration of the heroic death of British General James Wolfe before Quebec in 1759. The piece turns into a musical gallop, evoking the surging seesaw battle Wolfe’s army fought outside the walls of the fortress city. We have a collaboration between the trumpet wizardry of Wynton Marsalis and Mark O’Connor’s extraordinary virtuosity on the fiddle. The music is suited for advanced levels.
