Bridge Over Troubled Water, by Paul Simon, was the last song written for the last Simon and Garfunkel album. It was a huge worldwide hit in 1970, selling six million copies and winning several Grammies. Yet the song nearly wasn’t released as a single at all; radio stations at the time rarely played songs longer than three minutes and Bridge Over Troubled Water came in at five. This version is arranged as a duet for one Violin and one Viola.

Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal concert performances, with plenty of opportunity for expressive playing and dynamic contrast. The overall performance time is around four and a half minutes. The short sample audio is from the Clarinet and Alto Saxophone version while the full-length youtube performance is the Clarinet Duet.

Teachers will enjoy using this arrangement as a fun way to help with ensemble skills. There are some challenging syncopated rhythms, though knowing the original song well will help.

The Trumpet Tune and Air was in fact written for organ, with the melody played on thetrumpet stop.  Written around 1700, for many years this piece was attributed to Henry Purcell. But more recently many have questioned whether the composer was in fact Jeremiah Clarke, organist at St Paul’s Cathedral. What is known is that the piece was written for a semi-opera called The Island Princess, and that both men contributed music to the production. In recent years this piece has become a popular wedding favourite.

 This full version is arranged as a duet for Violin and Viola and the performance time is around two and a half minutes. Of course, performers, especially at weddings, may wish to abridge and shorten the arrangement. This is easily done as the different sections are self-contained and the repeat may be ignored. The short sample here and the full length version on the youtube link are from the Clarinet and Alto Saxophone version of this arrangement.

Felix Mendelssohn’s Wedding March was originally written in 1842 as incidental music to Shakespeare’s famousplay, Midsummer Night’s Dream. When Queen Victoria’s daughter used the music for her marriage in 1858, it became instantly popular and has remained a wedding favourite ever since.

This full version is arranged as a duet for Violin and Viola and the performance time is around 6 minutes. The Prince of Denmark’s March is better known nowadays as the Trumpet Voluntary and is often used in wedding ceremonies. It was in fact written for organ, with the melody played on thetrumpet stop.  Written around 1700, for many years this piece was mistakenly attributed to Henry Purcell. Only recently has it been established that the composer was Jeremiah Clarke, organist at St Paul’s Cathedral. Limerock adapted for violin and viola is an arrangement of one of the most beautiful hoedowns in American fiddling literature. Originally a two part tune, Texas fiddling pioneer Benny Thomasson arranged a version that approximates the one most performed today. Mark O’Connor and Edgar Meyer built upon the Thomasson variations to create a unique and thrilling violin and bass duet that first appeared on O’Connor’s Grammy winning recording, New Nashville Cats. O’Connor has adapted the 2nd part to include violin, cello and doublebass to offer four different versions of the arrangement. Limerock is a fine example of how a tune O’Connor learned by ear as a youth evolved into a virtuoso piece in a classical setting. It is most suitable for advanced and intermediate levels.
