I Saw Three Ships for Violin and Viola Duet in F Major. Intermediate. There are some interesting harmonies and some good ostinatos in this arrangement.

Leopold Mozart’s collection of little keyboard pieces are well suited for string duet.

My initial arrangement was for violin and cello.

To enable the lower part to be played by a viola (at the octave ) I created a slightly different part so as to avoid overlapping.

I have also created alternative parts for violin to play the viola part.

To accomodate a separate cello/cello version i have created the 1. violin part at the lower octave, and created a cello part in tenor clef (1.cello)

So we have

Joy to the World is a much-loved Christmas carol. This version is arranged as a duet in a Jazz Swing style for one Violin and one Viola. Click on the YouTube link above to listen to a full length performance of this arrangement played on Clarinet.

The lyrics of Joy to the World were composed by Isaac Watts in 1719, while the most popular melody associated with the carol was composed by Lowell Mason in 1843. Mason was an admirer of G.F. Handel and the similarity of the melody to parts of the Messiah have been pointed out by many commentators.

With a performance time of around two and a half minutes, this version of Joy to the World is perfect for seasonal celebrations and concert performances, both formal and informal. The jazz style is a fun, fresh and soulful take on this familiar tune.

Joy to the World is arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. There is plenty of articulation detail to help deliver an authentic style. The melody is played two and a half times, with a short chiming intro and outro. This arrangement is suitable for players at an intermediate level.

Ode to Joy is best known for its use by Ludwig van Beethoven in the final (fourth) movement of his Ninth Symphony, completed in 1824. Beethoven's text is not based entirely on Schiller's poem, and introduces a few new sections. His tune (but not Schiller's words) was adopted as the Anthem of Europe. This Violin and Viola Duet takes the famous melody through three keys. (F, G and A) Both parts have an equal share of the theme.
