The Carter Family first recorded this 1860 parlor song, I’ll Twine ‘Mid the Ringlets (Lyrics by Maud Irving, Music by Joseph Webster) in 1928. They changed the title to Wildwood Flower and also changed the lyrics. The words have continued to evolve over the decades and it developed into a Bluegrass standard. The 8 bar melody has remained the same. 

This arrangement intertwines the melody with vines of colorful harmony, descants, interludes, PDLT, slapping on the soundboard and etouffee. The melody is shared equally between the parts. There is confusion as to who is the exact composer of this melody. Perhaps it was an anonymous Cistercian Monk, or King John IV of Portugal (1604-1656), or John Reading (1645-1692) or John Francis Wade (1711-1786). The first published version of it was in 1751 by John Francis Wade, a Scottish scholar of plainchant so he is often given credit as its composer.

This arrangement has three verses of increasing difficulty; each using harmonics in the quiet sections. The dynamics are clearly marked. The melody is divided evenly between parts. The easier Trio version can be played along with this duet version to give 5 parts.

Carrickfergus is a town in County Antrim, north of Belfast. The lyrics tell of a nostalgic person missing his homeland and wishing he could move back to Carrickfergus. In this arrangement, the beautiful melody is augmented by flowing arpeggiated interludes representing the sound of waves from the sea.

The Multi-level pieces were initially arranged in an A Version. When that was completed, it was then simplified to form the B Version.  The B Version has thinner lines and allows more time for placing the fingers. The purpose is to permit harpists of various playing levels to enjoy performing together.

In the key of G, the melody is divided evenly between parts. Dynamics are clearly marked.

Friedrich Schiller wrote the poem Ode to Joy in 1785 as a celebration of the triumph of the brotherhood of man against war and desperation. A revised version was published in 1808. In 1824 Ludwig van Beethoven used parts of that poem in his Ninth Symphony. In 1907 Henry van Dyke added his choice of words to Beethoven’s melody to create the hymn Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee. Ode to Joy became the Anthem of the Council of Europe in 1972 and in 1985 the anthem of the European Community (EU). Ode to Joy is commonly used as a Wedding Recessional.
