O'Meara Music #4621501. Published by O'Meara Music (A0.808007). One of the most popular hymns of all times, the poem, What A Friend We Have in Jesus, was a poem written by Joseph Scriven in 1855. He sent it from Canada to his Mother in Ireland. In 1868, American Charles Converse, an attorney and composer of hymns, came across Scriven’s poem and set the words to music, publishing it in a hymnal. Set in the key of F, the melody is shared equally between parts. Each part is of equal difficulty, although Harp II makes F# in each verse. Dynamics are clearly marked. The melody has now been traced back to an English Ballad (Roud #5089). In the Dorian mode, the sixth scale degree is lowered in the harmony some of the time. Arranged for Lever or Pedal Harps, dynamics and pedal changes are clearly marked. Lever Harp I will set one flat at the beginning and leave it on throughout the entire piece.
