It represents Good King Wenceslas and his Page trudging through (eighth notes) the harsh winter weather on December 26 as they leave their warm castle to help the poor. Occasionally there is a pause as they catch their breath or look through the swirling snow at how far they have traveled. The fourth verse represents the Page walking in King Wenceslas’s footsteps. In 1849 English organist Henry John Gauntlett set the poem written by CecilFrancis Alexander to a melody he had named Irby which is now known as Once In Royal David’s City. The French carol, Il est né or He is Born was first published in 1862 although it is considered to be an ancient carol. The two carols are very similar in structure and phrasing. This is playable on both Lever and Pedal Harps. Both parts include knocking on the soundboard. Sections of the songs (A, B) and dynamics are clearly marked.
