One of the most popular hymns of all times, the poem, What A Friend We Have in Jesus, was a poem written by Joseph Scriven in 1855. He sent it from Canada to his Mother in Ireland. In 1868, American Charles Converse, an attorney and composer of hymns, came across Scriven’s poem and set the words to music, publishing it in a hymnal.

William Bradbury wrote the music for William Walford’s poem in 1861, publishing it in his book Golden Chains. The three verses in this arrangement tone paint the words of the poem. It moves from quiet private prayer in which you hear your heart beat to the happiness that comes from trusting in God’s grace.

This famous Shaker quick dance has many names including Tis a Gift to be Simple, Simple Gifts, and Lord of the Dance. Aaron Copland included the melody in his ballet, Appalachian Spring (1944). Arrangements of Simple Gifts has been sung at three US Presidential Inaugurations (1985, 1993 and 2009).

He used a haunting melody that he’d heard during his travels through Appalachia with a poem that had been published in 1811. He titled the hymn Wondrous Love. The melody has now been traced back to an English Ballad (Roud #5089). In the Dorian mode, the sixth scale degree is lowered in the harmony some of the time.

Beethoven was influenced by the writings of Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller, a German poet, playwright, and historian. His 1785 poem, An die Freude (Ode to Joy), spoke to Beethoven of perfect, eternal spiritual bliss and the unity of nature.
