Suitable for lever harps or pedal harps. This song, being a traditional tune from Norway, makes me imagine a wintry scene. So it seems especially apt for December celebrations, which is when I usually play it.  But it’s perfectly appropriate any time of year!The sound is interesting to American ears due to the use of the Lydian mode. It’s based on F, but with B naturals (instead of B flats as in F Major)! There are no lever or pedal changes. The Harp I part (with the melody) is intermediate, and the Harp II part (the accompaniment) is super easy. It would be a fun song for a teacher and student to play together.  You can easily turn this duet into a trio by having Harp III take over the left-hand parts of Harp I.

The lyrics tell of the two shepherdesses who discovered the stable with the baby Jesus and his mother. They joyfully run to tell the villagers the news. This arrangement allows harpists to create a soothing sound for the sleeping baby. Arranged for Lever or Pedal Harps, it is in the key of G. The melody is divided evenly between parts. Dynamics are clearly marked. There are tolling of bells within the introduction, interlude and ending.

The Multi-level pieces were initially arranged in an A Version. When that was completed, it was then simplified to form the B Version.  The B Version has thinner lines and allows more time for placing the fingers. In 1849 English organist Henry John Gauntlett set the poem written by CecilFrancis Alexander to a melody he had named Irby which is now known as Once In Royal David’s City. The French carol, Il est né or He is Born was first published in 1862 although it is considered to be an ancient carol. The two carols are very similar in structure and phrasing. This is playable on both Lever and Pedal Harps. Both parts include knocking on the soundboard. Sections of the songs (A, B) and dynamics are clearly marked.

It begins with a music box effect and builds to a triumphant chorus. The Harp 1 part uses both hands in the treble clef. At the chorus, Harp 1 builds to forte playing glissandos and triads doubled in both hands. Harp 2 plays eighth note arpeggios in the treble clef at the beginning. At the chorus it alternates LH octaves and RH chords in the bass clef for a full sound.
