He used a haunting melody that he’d heard during his travels through Appalachia with a poem that had been published in 1811. He titled the hymn Wondrous Love. The melody has now been traced back to an English Ballad (Roud #5089). In the Dorian mode, the sixth scale degree is lowered in the harmony some of the time. Arranged for Lever or Pedal Harps, dynamics and pedal changes are clearly marked.
