Both Michael Row the Boat Ashore and There is a Balm in Gilead are Afro-American Spirituals. Charles Pickard Ware wrote down Michael Row the Boat Ashore after listening to slaves sing it as they worked on the plantations or rowed across water. The words ask Archangel Michael for help. There is a Balm in Gilead comes from both the Old and New Testaments. Unitarian Minister, George Willis Cooke wrote a song in the later 1800’s that has become a campfire mainstay. I chose to list it as Down in My Heart. It’s also known as I’ve Got the Joy, I’ve Got that Joy, Joy, Joy and Joy, Joy, Joy. This arrangement is playable on either Lever or Pedal harps. Dynamics are clearly marked.

Johann met the challenge with first presenting The Blue Danube and then three weeks later giving the Ball attendees its twin, Artist’s Life. This autobiographical piece starts slow, as if just waking up, but once the Waltzes start, it’s all fun.   This arrangement has four out of five of the original Waltzes with all the Waltzes and sections marked to make creating a shorter version easier. It has both a pedal harp and lever harp version that is intended to be performed together. They only differ in the pedal/lever markings and an occasional harmony note. The dynamics are clearly marked.

Juliette responds with this famous arietta – singing of her hopes and dreams for her life and of the love she hopes to find. Romeo overhears her singing and falls in love with her.   The original French title is Ah! Je Veux Vivre. Another English title to the arietta is Daydreams.   This uplifting arrangement has both pedal and lever harp versions that may be performed together. They only differ in the pedal/lever markings and occasional grace or harmony notes. There are numerous pedal and lever changes. The dynamics are clearly marked.

In 1849 English organist Henry John Gauntlett set the poem written by CecilFrancis Alexander to a melody he had named Irby which is now known as Once In Royal David’s City. The French carol, Il est né or He is Born was first published in 1862 although it is considered to be an ancient carol. The two carols are very similar in structure and phrasing. This is playable on both Lever and Pedal Harps. Both parts include knocking on the soundboard. Sections of the songs (A, B) and dynamics are clearly marked.

No proof exists that Turlough O’Carolan actually composed this tune, however since the 1800’s books have credited the song to him. It’s certain he did know the neighboring blind harper, M’aire Dhall. She was both a talented harper and harp teacher.

During the 1700’s, not only did both Mozart and Haydn use the melody within their music, but Welsh harpist John Parry included the air in a musical manuscript he wrote. In 1794 this New Year’s Eve Carol (Nos Galan) was published with words. In 1862 harpist John Thomas included this Carol with both Welsh and English words within a set of four volumes of Welsh Melodies he published. Lever/pedal changes and dynamics are clearly marked.

While being a traveling harper, he dedicated 4 Airs in honor of her. This is his Third Air and most well-known. Arranged for either Lever or Pedal Harps, it is in the key of C. The melody is divided evenly between parts. Dynamics are clearly marked.

Harpoline #761150. Published by Harpoline (A0.1160839). This is an arrangement of Brian Boru's march for two harps. I had originally arranged it for harp trio but needed something for two harps. Certain things have been simplified so that learners with only a couple of years experience can play this. A-minor and no lever changes. The melody travels so the parts are quite balanced.

It migrated to Appalachia and became the basis of numerous Americans folk songs. This is a fun, rhythmic, diatonic Carol arranged for Lever or Pedal Harp has 4 verses of 16 measures each plus interludes. Dynamics are clearly marked.

Johann Strauss, Jr. used themes from his operetta, Indigo and the Forty Thieves, to create this wonderful orchestra piece. The mysterious Arabian introduction is followed by three Waltzes. Waltz II is the most famous melody. The pedal and lever harp duet versions are not the same although they can play in an ensemble together. They differ in the pedal/lever markings, harmony notes and which harp is playing the melody note. The dynamics and Waltz sections are clearly marked. Johann’s youngest brother, Eduard, was a harpist. He conducted his own orchestra from his harp.
