Obs.: The 17 Polish Songs, Op. 74 were assembled posthumously and are not in chronological order. This particular song, Wiosna [Spring], although the second song in the set, was actually the fourteenth Chopin wrote. It was composed in 1838 and first published in Berlin in 1857. It is thus contemporary with the Op. 33 mazurkas and Op. 40 polonaises. Chopin's Polish song Wiosna is set on a text by the composer's friend and Polish poet Stefan Witwicki (1801-1847). Witwicki's descriptions of blossoming flowers and animals in green pastures contrast with gloomy ruminations.Â
The music is beautifully simple and quite melancholic. This piano piece Wiosna is in fact the piano part of the song Wiosna. Chopin arranged it for piano solo several times for his friends between 1838 and 1848.
Franz Liszt also transcribed it for the second of his Chants polonais.
This is an arrangement for Viola and Cello.
