Antonio Lucio Vivaldi (1678 – 1741) was an Italian Baroque composer, virtuoso violinist, teacher, impresario, and Roman Catholic priest. Born in Venice, the capital of the Venetian Republic, Vivaldi is regarded as one of the greatest Baroque composers, and his influence during his lifetime was widespread across Europe, being paramount in the development of Johann Sebastian Bach's instrumental music. He composed many instrumental concertos, for the violin and a variety of other musical instruments, as well as sacred choral works and more than forty operas. His best-known work is a series of violin concertos known as the Four Seasons.

F. C.’s Jig for violin and cello is from the album Appalachia Waltz which features Mark O’Connor and Yo-Yo Ma playing the jig. O’Connor utilized the third movement of his Fiddle Concerto and arranged from it a violin and cello duet. The result is thrilling - a virtuoso duet full of melody, interplay and energy, pushing both instruments all the way to its conclusion. F. C.’s Jig is a spirited, well known derivation of the Fiddle Concerto’s jig. The music is suited for advanced and intermediate levels.

The Symphony No. 6 in F major, Op. 68, also known as the Pastoral Symphony, is a symphony composed by Ludwig van
Beethoven and completed in 1808. One of Beethoven's few works containing explicitly programmatic content (instrumental music that relates a story or portrays a scene), the symphony was first performed in the Theater an der Wien on
22 December 1808 in a four-hour concert.

The finale, which is in F major, is in 6/8 time. The movement is in sonata rondo form, meaning that the main theme
appears in the tonic key at the beginning of the development as well as the exposition and the recapitulation. Like many
 classical finales, this movement emphasizes a symmetrical eight-bar theme, in this case representing the shepherds' song of thanksgiving.

The coda starts quietly and gradually builds to an ecstatic culmination for the full orchestra (minus storm instruments)
with the first violins playing very rapid triplet tremolo on a high F. There follows a fervent passage suggestive of prayer, marked by Beethoven pianissimo, sotto voce; most conductors slow the tempo for this passage. After a brief period of afterglow, the work ends with two emphatic F-major chords.

Sometimes this tune is called Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, sometimes it's called Baa Baa Black Sheep, and sometimes it's called The Alphabet Song. But back in Mozart's day, it was known as the French folk tune Ah, vous dirai-je maman. Mozart composed a lovely theme and variations on this melody for piano in 1781 (K. 265/300e).

This is an exhilarating arrangement for violin and cello. Although the violin gets more melody, the cello part is every bit as interesting. Some of the variations are quite challenging, allowing each musician to show off their musical skills.

Joy to the World is a much-loved Christmas carol. This version is arranged as a duet in a Jazz Swing style for one Violin and one Cello. Click on the YouTube link above to listen to a full length performance of this arrangement played on Clarinet.

The lyrics of Joy to the World were composed by Isaac Watts in 1719, while the most popular melody associated with the carol was composed by Lowell Mason in 1843. Mason was an admirer of G.F. Handel and the similarity of the melody to parts of the Messiah have been pointed out by many commentators.

With a performance time of around two and a half minutes, this version of Joy to the World is perfect for seasonal celebrations and concert performances, both formal and informal. The jazz style is a fun, fresh and soulful take on this familiar tune.

Joy to the World is arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. There is plenty of articulation detail to help deliver an authentic style. The melody is played two and a half times, with a short chiming intro and outro. This arrangement is suitable for players at an intermediate level.
