Bublitschki is a Ukrainian/Jewish Folk song, often performed by Klezmer musicians. This version is arranged as a duet for one Violin and one Cello.

Bublitschki was written in 1922 by Yakov Jadow. The title means pretzels in Russian and was inspired by the pretzel sellers by the railway station in Odessa. Jadow observed that the street-vendors were poverty-stricken and wrote the song as a lament.Initially popular in the Soviet Union, a recording by the Barry Sisters in 1939 brought this song to an international audience.

Bublitschki is simply arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. The melody is in two sections and is played twice with a short coda and constant variations in the accompaniment. Bublitschki is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above. With a performance time of just over three minutes, this version of Bublitschki is perfect for concert performances, both formal and informal. The lyrics were written by Morris Winchevsky, a Lithuanian writer who became a prominent socialist/communist in early twentieth century London and New York. ·        Hava Nagila (Let us rejoice) was written in 1917 in Jerusalem by Avraham Zvi Idelssohn, considered to be the father of Israeli music. Idelssohn's research into the music cultures of the different Jewish communities of Jerusalem laid the foundation for the growth of a unique melding of east and west that is the Israeli musical style.

·        Hevenu Shalom Aleichem (We brought you peace) was first published in 1910 by the musicologist Franz Haverel, as a Turkish folk melody Sala'am Aleikum. It came to Palestine in the same year, as an advertisement for Turkish cigarettes; the tune was printed on the package.

·        Hayu Leilot (There were nights) was written by Mordecai Zeira in 1938 to a poem by Yaakov Orland. Though this song is little known outside of Israel today, it is one of my favorites, and I hope will become one of yours as well.
