It came to Palestine in the same year, as an advertisement for Turkish cigarettes; the tune was printed on the package. ·        Hayu Leilot (There were nights) was written by Mordecai Zeira in 1938 to a poem by Yaakov Orland. For the second verse, the violin takes the melody up an octave while the cello plays accompanying pizzicato and arco arpeggiated figures. The violin then soars with an obligato descant while the cello plays the tune in its rich middle register.
