The Trumpet Tune and Air was in fact written for organ, with the melody played on thetrumpet stop.  Written around 1700, for many years this piece was attributed to Henry Purcell. But more recently many have questioned whether the composer was in fact Jeremiah Clarke, organist at St Paul’s Cathedral. What is known is that the piece was written for a semi-opera called The Island Princess, and that both men contributed music to the production. In recent years this piece has become a popular wedding favourite. This full version is arranged as a duet for Violin and Cello and the performance time is around two and a half minutes. Of course, performers, especially at weddings, may wish to abridge and shorten the arrangement. This is easily done as the different sections are self-contained and the repeat may be ignored. The arrangements for guitar solo were written in two-part counterpoint and followed the strophic form of the folk songs involved. The melodic transcriptions of the folk melodies were not based in any particular performance, also avoiding the elaborate in many cases instrumental introductions associated with these songs. Thus, only the vocal melodies in a general recognizable version were presented. This new presentation for instrumental duets will stay with this generalised melodic version (without exploiting the instrumental introductions), but the form from strophic will become ternary (ABA). The popularity of his music eclipsed that of even his teacher Haydn and publishers vied to bring out his latest works as soon as they were finished. Some 2000 separate prints of Pleyel works had appeared by 1800 and his fame extended to every corner of Europe and as far afield as North America. Pleyel's career as a composer spanned less than thirty years with the majority of his works composed in the 1780s. He founded a successful publishing house in Paris in the mid-1790s and later began manufacturing keyboard instruments. With increasing demands on his time from his business concerns Pleyel's productivity as a composer dropped sharply and he ceased composing around 1805. Among the authentic chamber works the duos occupy a particularly interesting place. The Six Duos for Violin & Violoncello (Benton 501-506) appeared in over twenty editions in Pleyel's lifetime, the first in 1787, and in a variety of scorings. Although their unusual instrumentation undoubtedly contributed to the popularity of the Duos, their musical qualities - evidenced by the large number of contemporary arrangements - probably played a greater role. The works abound in attractive and distinctive melodic material; Pleyel writes idiomatically for both instruments and his part-writing is varied and interesting.

Written when Beethoven was 31, the Moonlight Sonata (Mondscheinsonate in German) was composed after he finished some commissioned works, but there is no evidence that he was hired to write this work. It did not receive its nickname until 1832, five years after Beethoven's death. It was the critic Ludwig Rellstab who compared the music to a moonlighting on Lake Lucerne. This comparison was adopted as a nickname for the work. Called Quasi una fantasia by the author - like its companion Op. 27, No. 1 - the piece was completed in 1801 and dedicated the following year to one of the composer's pupils. Beethoven chose to open the sonata with a slow, hypnotic arpeggio movement, the best known of the entire work. The dotted rhythm of its minimal melody evokes the tradition of 'Trauermusik' (funeral music).
