Modern Rock music has its origins in Rock’n’Roll, with the first use of the word in 1951 by an Ohio DJ.  The first big hit was Bill Haley’s Rock Around the Clockin 1955, but other artists such as Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bo Diddley, Gene Vincent and Little Richard all have strong claims to being the first Rock’n’Roll artist.

Kandel’s Hora is a Jewish dance tune, often performed by Klezmer musicians. This version is arranged as a duet for one Trumpet and one Trombone.

Kandel’s Hora was written and named after Harry Kandel. Born in Lvov, and after a short period in the Russian army, Kandel emigrated to the USA in 1905 and quickly found work as a clarinettist in vaudeville, Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show and JP Sousa’s band. A brief but productive period as band-leader and recording artist followed, after which Kandel retired from performing to run a music shop.

Kandel’s Hora is arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. A slow Hora in triple meter is followed by a faster Freylach version of the same melody in 4. Kandel’s Hora is suitable for players at an advanced intermediate level and above. With a performance time of three minutes, this version of Kandel’s Hora is perfect for concert performances, both formal and informal. In the Hall Of The Mountain King is a piece of orchestral music composed by Edvard Grieg in 1875 as incidental music for the sixth scene of act 2 in Henrik Ibsen's 1867 play Peer Gynt. In the late ‘50s just a handful of national TV shows in the US had a huge influence on the music and dance crazes of the time. Artists and dances came and went with dizzying speed. Chalypso was a short-lived craze in 1958 that combined the music of the new Rock’n’Roll with much-simplified steps borrowed from Cha Cha and Calypso; and no sooner had it caught on than it was itself supplanted by The Twist.

Chocolate Chalypso is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above, with the accessible key and range balanced by some syncopated rhythms and accidentals. With a playing-time of around one and a half minutes, Chocolate Chalypso is a perfect upbeat addition to any performance program, formal or informal.
