The Chocolate Chalypso is a fun and original duet written by David McKeown for one Trumpet and one Trombone. Chocolate Chalypso is one in a series of ten Easter-themed duets each written in a different American dance style. In the late ‘50s just a handful of national TV shows in the US had a huge influence on the music and dance crazes of the time. Artists and dances came and went with dizzying speed. Chalypso was a short-lived craze in 1958 that combined the music of the new Rock’n’Roll with much-simplified steps borrowed from Cha Cha and Calypso; and no sooner had it caught on than it was itself supplanted by The Twist. Chocolate Chalypso is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above, with the accessible key and range balanced by some syncopated rhythms and accidentals. One of the songs in that book was titled Nordisches Lied, which is usually translated as Northern Song, or I use the alternate translation of Norse Song. The original was Romantic Folk style with thick chords which I have simplified and arranged into ornamented 2-part Baroque style. Besides giving the symbols I have written out my suggested ornaments in cue notes. Continuing in Baroque style I used terraced dynamics on each alternate line and further denote them as delicately or boldly. The ornamentation is all in the upper melody; the lower part is a fun contrapuntal walking bass line of entirely quarter notes (crotchets). I have arranged it into ABBA form.
