Also known as “A Day In The Life Of A Fool,†and “Manha de Carnival,†the song was first introduced in the movie “Black Orpheus in 1959. It’s one of the first jazz tunes that many players learn.  Killer Joe is among the eight standards written by Benny Golson for the jazz repertoire. The song was written in 1954 and first appeared on the album entitled Flyin' Home by the jazz vibraphonist Lionel Hampton. The song had its premiere in 1954 during the composer's stint with Lionel Hampton's big band.

The Miles Davis Quintet featured tenor saxophone player John Coltrane, pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones. The song became a Miles Davis specialty and it appears on several live session recordings and compilations in different versions. The tune was taken up and performed by countless jazz musicians and is still a favorite in jam sessions.

The song is the most popular song from the 1965 Broadway musical Man of La Mancha and is also featured in the 1972 film of the same name starring Peter O'Toole. The complete song is first sung by Don Quixote as he stands vigil over his armor, in response to Aldonza (Dulcinea)'s question about what he means by following the quest. It is reprised partially three more times – the last by prisoners in a dungeon as Miguel de Cervantes and his manservant mount the drawbridge-like prison staircase to face trial by the Spanish Inquisition. A version recorded by Jack Jones peaked at No. 35 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart and reached No. 1 on the Easy Listening chart.
