From Kurt Weill's last Broadway musical, Lost in the Stars, which opened on 30 October 1949, a year before Weill's early death at the age of 50. Based on Cry the Beloved Country, it was adapted by Maxwell Anderson, who worked with Weill on his very first Broadway musical, Knickerbocker Holiday, in 1935, not long after Weill arrived in the USA as a refugee from Nazi Germany. The song makes terrific use of Weill's affinity with the Blues, the harmonies well-suited to the mellow tones of the guitar - a haunting piece!

A hauntingly beautiful song from the Kurt Weill and Ogden Nash Broadway hit musical, One Touch of Venus, which opened in 1943 (it was later made into a movie with Ava Gardner - dubbed! - with very little credit going to Weill!). Sung and recorded often by many big-name stars, my personal favourite is Sammy Davis Jr - 'nuff said!

This great Brecht/Weill song surely needs no introduction! Written (at the very last minute!) for Brecht/Weill's 1928 'play with music', based on 18th century English satirist, John Gay's, The Beggar's Opera, the opening song of The Threepenny Opera - an unexpected 'mega-hit', running for 2 years in a small 'fringe' theatre in Weimar Republic Berlin, and making the 30-year-old Brecht a millionaire! - has remained the biggest hit from these extraordinary artists. And, following the 1950's Broadway revival, with new English lyrics by Marc Blitzstein, became an even bigger smash with covers by everyone who's anyone in showbiz from Louis Sachmo Armstrong to Bobby Darin, 'Ol' Blue Eyes' himself, and on through the millennium (the 100th anniversary of Weill's birth and 50th of his death!), with yet more covers by the likes of Sting and Nick Cave. Like the song, the list goes on ... and on ...!

Brecht's 'Grand Guignol' masterpiece, Pirate-Jenny, was penned sometime before the idea of a 'play with music', based on John Gay's Beggar's Opera, was conceived. It was even set to music (to Brecht's own tune, which Weill used as the basis for the chorus in his setting). One of many 'greatest hits' from Brecht and Weill's Threepenny Opera - itself, a huge hit when premiered in 1928 in Berlin, and again, on Broadway, with English lyrics by Marc Blitzstein, it has absolutely nothing to do with the characters or the action in The Threepenny Opera! But, it was too good a song not to be used! Interpreted by greats, such as Nina Simone, among others, this song, like Mack the Knife and September Song, continues to wow generation after generation!

A brilliant example of Brecht's wit and keen sense of irony, and Weill's sublime music; with English lyrics by Marc Blitzstein, which perfectly capture the sly humour and 'moral' - words to the 'wise'! - of this great song from Brecht and Weill's 1928 Berlin hit, The Threepenny Opera. An instant hit again on Broadway in Blitzstein's version, with immortal ballads, such as Mack the Knife and Pirate-Jenny.
