If you were there when Jesus was on earth performing His miracles, and you lived in Mary's town, what might you have asked her? We all know the story now. We know how God sent the angel Gabriel to Mary to prepare her. Today, we know that yes, Mary knew the important role she had. She was told how important her son's birth would be. In short, the answer to 'Mary Did You Know?' was yes, she knew. But back then, people probably didn't know that.

Mary, Did You Know? - Arrangement for Voice, Piano and Guitar by Michael Thomas Coull

Mary, Did You Know? is a song addressing Mary, the mother of the Saviour, with lyrics written by Mark Lowry in 1984, and music by Buddy Greene in 1991.  It was originally recorded by singer Michael English and released on his self-titled debut solo album in 1991.  At the time, English and Lowry were members of the 'Gaither Vocal Band', and Greene was touring with them.  The song reached Number 6 on CCM Magazine's Adult Contemporary Chart.  Lowry would record the song several times himself, most notably with the Gaither Vocal Band on their 1998 album, Still the Greatest Story Ever Told. 

The song has since gone on to become a modern classic, recorded by hundreds of artists over the years, across multiple genres.  Several recordings have reached the top ten in the Billboard R&B and Holiday charts.

This arrangement of Mary, Did You Know? is based on the version that popular American singer/songwriter Gary Chapman recorded for his album This Gift in 1997.
