By David Warin Solomons. By David Warin Solomons. Classical,Contemporary,Singer/Songwriter. Score. 10 pages. David Warin Solomons #985851. Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.1402627).

This song is based on parts of the poem by Paul Valéry Fragments du Narcisse which explains and ponders the idea of the origin of narcissism (self-love)

The words are as follows

Que de ma seule essence ;

Quitte enfin le silence, ose enfin me répondre,

Va des jours consumés joindre le sort funeste ;
Penche-toi... Baise-toi. Tremble de tout ton être !
L’insaisissable amour que tu me vins promettre

English translation by D W Solomons

But I, beloved Narcissus, am curious only
about my very being
everything else has nothing more than a heart of mystery
everything else is nothing but absence
Only what I own, my dear sovereign body, is what I have
The most beautiful of mortals cannot cherish anything more than itself
Sweet and golden, is there a more holy idol
within an entire forest, self-consumed and held
and set in the living azure by so many birds?
Is there a more divine gift than the favour of the waters
and a more adorable use of the dying day
than to return to me the honour of my face?

Please don't be silent, please dare to reply
Beautiful and cruel Narcissus, unreachable child
owning what I hold dear but guarded by the nymph

Let the two of us, you on my lips and I in my silence
make a prayer to the gods that they should be moved by so much love
that they would keep the day held in its purple sunset

Gods! only the pale and tender parts remain of the august day,
It joins the fate of other days that were consumed
It goes down into the hell of deep memory
Alas, miserable body, it is time to become as one
Bend down - kiss yourself - tremble with all your being
The intangible love that you promised
has gone by, and in a shiver, shatters Narcissus and flees.

Composed by David Warin Solomons. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score. 8 pages. David Warin Solomons #958551. Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.1373984).

This setting of Paul Verlaine's poem Nevermore plays on an ambiguity of major and minor modes, swaying back and forth between the tonal centres of G minor and E flat major

The pdf contains score and separate guitar part

The poem and English translation are as follows:

Nevermore

Souvenir, souvenir, que me veux-tu? L'automne

English translation by S N Solomons:

Memory, what would you have of me? Autumn
Drove the thrush up through the atonic air
And the pale sun pierced in monotone
The chill and windy woods and the leaf flare.

Together but alone we went our ways,
Hair blown awry and monad thoughts unfurled.
Sudden she turned to me her tender gaze:
What was your finest day? - a voice of gold,

Dulcet and low, ineffable and fresh.
And I said nothing, offered her a smile,
Seized her pale hand and pressed a kiss.

Ah those first flowers of spring how sweet they were,
And that first whispered Yes, how it beguiled,
Won from those lovely lips with gentle murmur.

The single topped charts in the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand and Sweden.  In the UK, it was the fourth highest selling single of the 1960s.  The song's verse is a twelve-bar blues in structure, a formula that the Beatles seldom applied to their own material.  When pressed by American journalists in 1966 to reveal the song's true meaning, McCartney stated: I think you can put any interpretation you want on anything, but when someone suggests that 'Can't Buy Me Love' is about a prostitute, I draw the line.  He went on to say: The idea behind it was that all these material possessions are all very well, but they won't buy me what I really want.  However, he was to comment later: It should have been 'Can Buy Me Love' when reflecting on the perks that money and fame had brought him.
