Organ - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.534661 Composed by Claude Debussy/Robert Orledge. 20th Century,Concert,Halloween. Score. 16 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #5739561. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.534661). Over the years 1908–16, Debussy had produced a viable scenario for Usher on his third attempt. But when he came to making a complete draft of the music, he seems to have lost interest during Roderick Usher’s long monologue, even though he was setting his own text. As in No-ja-li he jumped to the next passage that interested him, in this case the exciting final melodrama and the collapse of the Usher house itself. In the process of completing the missing half of the score, I discovered that by reusing Debussy’s material for similar psychological situations across the opera, and by metamorphosing existing ideas (as Debussy does with Mélisande’s theme in his opera Pelléas et Mélisande), the only things I really needed to add were linking material and any passages where fast music was required. So the ‘nightmare scherzo’, and Lady Madeline’s escape from her coffin and her final bloody revenge on her brother are all mine, but most of the rest is existing Debussy in changing contexts (in which the Russian technique of ‘changing backgrounds’, both harmonic and textural, proved extremely useful, as it did to Debussy in his Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune). Eventually, both my completed ballet No-ja-li and the House of Usher were successfully premiered in 2006 and the latter soon began to find its way into the established repertoire in Europe and the US. To further support this, I transcribed some of the highlights of Debussy’s score as A Night in the House of Usher for organ, and subsequently piano—with a focus on Scene 2 and the final, horrific and maca-bre melodrama. This climaxes in the double deaths of Roderick Usher and his Sister Madeline, together with the disintegration of the ill-fated House of Usher into the stagnant lake-all beneath a blood-red moon.In this form it was first performed by Ian Buckle in the Howard Assembly Rooms, Leeds in 2010.

Piano Solo - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.998875 Composed by Robert A. Howard. 21st Century,Classical,Contemporary,Contest,Festival,Instructional. Score. 2 pages. Robert A. Howard #6383269. Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.998875). The Fragment series of short piano pieces was conceived for pianists of almost any standard. As suggested in the title, each piece is based on a single compositional fragment or sketch that had otherwise remained incomplete and dormant. Fragment II initially builds up the notes of a major chord with added augmented fourth, in a brief introduction. The main section of the piece features the simple device of alternating added note harmonies, rocking back and forth like a pendulum. These include an upper pedal on the note A in each chord, landing on A minor around the mid-point. Meanwhile, a slightly unsettling off-beat lower pedal ostinato rings on throughout. Towards the end, the opening chords are alluded to, before settling on reiteration of a resolution on A major. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for almost all standards of pianist, including students and more advanced players. Other works from the Fragment cycle are also available via Sheet Music Plus.Duration: 3 minutes 10 seconds.Registered with PRS (Performing Rights Society, UK).Composer's website: www.roberthowardmusic.co.uk

Chamber Orchestra - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1471118 Composed by Robert A. Howard. 20th Century,Classical,Contemporary,Religious,Spiritual. 17 pages. Robert A. Howard #1048771. Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.1471118). In Memoriam, for chamber orchestra, is a short but powerful work. It was specifically composed in memory of the composer's father, but the work can be used to the reflect any loss, or similar sentiment. The point of departure is the pounding repeated tones (the note D, for Death) at the start of the Lacrymosa of Benjamin Britten's Sinfonia da Requiem; a work which mourned the death of both its composer's parents. Throughout my In Memoriam, the repeated pedal note D is literally ever-present and obsessive, like the looming of death itself, and the percussion take a somewhat military role. The main melodic idea is a twelve-note theme stated at the beginning, though the music is not strictly serial. This theme undergoes various transformations and orchestrations, depicting the many facets of a character who essentially remains themself. More optimistic interludes feature woodwind solos, but the note D always remains. A passage of stark two-part counterpoint is followed by the disintegration of the main theme before a varied return of previous material. Then follows the inevitable dominance of the note D, in crescendo, before the work abruptly ends, frozen still. The work is highly accessible for both performers and audience. The attached document is the score only, with audio for reference. Note that the 3rd & 4th horn parts are optional, or they could be played on 2 trombones.Duration: 5 minutes 30 seconds.Registered with PRS (Performing Rights Society, UK).Composer's website: www.roberthowardmusic.co.uk

Instrumental Duet,Violin - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1503126 Composed by Robert A. Howard. 21st Century,Chamber,Classical,Contemporary,Contest,Festival. 45 pages. Robert A. Howard #1078708. Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.1503126). This piece is an extended, three movement Violin Sonata for violin and piano. The work explores the subtitle concept of 'circling'. This is pursued through a wide variety of musical elements. These include: circling melodies, repetitive chains of (modulating) chord sequences, motoric cross-rhythms and syncopation, heterophonic canonic textures, and large-scale concentric structures. The fast, first movement is in a loose symmetrical sonata form in D (modal) minor. The resolute and scalic first subject, based on the opening core motif, is followed by a transition to a more lyrical and repetitive, cantabile second theme. The ensuing development section passes through various keys, with a new, modal third theme at its centre, featuring parallel motion, syncopation, and an ostinato in the accompaniment. The varied recapitulation presents the opening two themes in reverse order (thus giving overall structural symmetry to the movement). The heart of the work as a whole is the slow romanza-like second movement, centred on G. In ternary form, the outer sections present a highly memorable lyrical theme in a series of modulating and canonic textural variations. The contrasting middle section is much more unsettled in its three varied statements of a new theme accompanied by uncertain minor sevenths chords. The rondo-like finale in D is the most minimalist in style and rhythm. A circling, motivic and scalic main theme appears between highly contrasting episodes. The first of these is a folk-like rustic theme, while the second is a sentimental melody, played over an arpeggio and descending bass line accompaniment. Heard 3 times, in 3 different keys and registers, this idea leads to an recap of the main rondo theme, signalling the end of the work. Overall, the piece is genuinely melodic and is accessible to the listener. The work is suitable for performance by higher grade or professional violinists and pianists. Please note that the document provided is the full score only (also serves as the piano part), with reference audio.Duration: 22 minutes.Registered with PRS (Performing Rights Society, UK).Composer's website: www.roberthowardmusic.co.uk.

Piano Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.998883 Composed by Robert A. Howard. 21st Century,Contemporary,Standards. Score. 9 pages. Robert A. Howard #6486865. Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.998883). Porthleven is based on the 1951 painting, of the same name, by Cornish artist Peter Lanyon, which is held in the collection of Tate St. Ives. The artwork is a haphazard abstract representation of the coastal town of Porthleven, near Helston, on the fringe of the Lizard Peninsula. The painting depicts the town's unusual feature of three inter-connected harbours, as well as a cross on a tower, which likely refers to the church. The work is formed in three sections, as a relation to the three harbours. It explores the notion of bell-tones, and even of change-ringing, in reference to the aforementioned church bell tower. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for more advanced pianists, including students and professionals. Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1407282 Composed by Robert A. Howard. 21st Century,Chamber,Classical,Contemporary,Wedding. 7 pages. Robert A. Howard #989959. Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.1407282). This flexibly scored work is an SATB choral piece, with exact instrumental doubling in four parts. It sets a famous sonnet by William Shakespeare. The work develops a series of memorable motifs as it delicately expresses the inherently 'musical' text. Vocal lines are carefully designed to be singable, and pitches can be obtained with relative ease (aided by the instrumental doublings). The piece is appropriate for most standards and size of 4-part choir and instrumentalists, and was composed with good amateur performers in mind. Note: this document is the score only. The complete set of (instrumental) parts, with score, is available via a search for the COMA Music Library. The work can be performed by SATB voices only, and there is a score available from SMP entitiled 'Music to Hear (Unaccompanied SATB Version)'.Duration: 4 minutes 45 seconds.Registered with PRS (Performing Rights Society, UK).Composer's website: www.roberthowardmusic.co.uk

Digital Download SKU: A0.1471488 Composed by Robert A. Howard. 20th Century,Classical,Contemporary,Halloween,Thriller. 30 pages. Robert A. Howard #1049261. Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.1471488). This work aims to depict a common theme of certain pieces by some classical composers: that of deathly or devilish dances, and the like. This piece is an extended single movement structure for a mixed chamber ensemble that is an octet of oboe, 2 clarinets, bassoon, piano, viola, cello, and double bass. The form is divided into a series of contrasting dances (labelled as Dance, Folk Lament, Jig, Meditation, and Funeral March), all of which are interspersed with differing statements of an ostinato-based 'chorale' idea on the piano. The whole work is framed by an 'intrada', which builds the germinal motif on which the whole piece is based, characterised by semitones and fourths. Indeed, the 'devil's interval' of the augmented fourth has a particular function and significance. The piece actually ends with an 'epilogue', which features mysterious and ghostly reminiscences of the previous main sections. The title of this work also refers to the episode 'Dance of the Dead' from the 1960s cult TV series 'The Prisoner'. In part, the piece attempts to capture the mystery and atmosphere of the series, and of that specific episode. Indeed, the music's series of related but contrasting sections act almost as an original sequence of dramatic TV incidental music cues. The work is accessible to both performers and audience alike. The attached document is the full score only, with audio provided.Duration: 11 minutes 40 minutes.Registered with PRS (Performing Rights Society, UK).Composer's website: www.roberthowardmusic.co.uk

Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1407989 Composed by Robert A. Howard. 21st Century,Chamber,Classical,Contemporary,Thriller. 5 pages. Robert A. Howard #990552. Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.1407989). Ghost takes its title from the art work by Ron Mueck (1998), which is in the collection of the Tate Gallery, Liverpool. Mueck's Ghost is an extraordinarily realistic, larger-than-life-sized mannequin. This model is of a young lady in a swimsuit, with exceptionally long legs and an embarrassed glance about her face. This musical work attempts to capture the ghostly, solitary and threatening qualities of the work. It is flexibly scored, in four instrumental parts, and there are opportunities for 'solo' and 'tutti' playing. Character is depicted in a four note motif (heard at the beginning), which is transformed across five highly contrasting sections. There is a significant cadenza-like solo passage, for a treble clef instrument. Ghost was commissioned by COMA for the Autumn Residency at Tate Liverpool in October 2002. Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.998808). This piece is concerned with memories and reminiscences. It uses a harmonic sequence of jazz-like chords, only heard fully in the final passage. The work is characterised by material recurring out of sequence throughout the piece, with only subtle changes (mainly of context). This helps to establish the 'reminiscence' aspect of the work. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for most standards of pianist, including students and more advanced players.Duration: 2 minutes 05 seconds.Registered with PRS (Performing Rights Society, UK).Composer's website: www.roberthowardmusic.co.uk

Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.998874). The Fragment series of short piano pieces was conceived for pianists of almost any standard. As suggested in the title, each piece is based on a single compositional fragment or sketch that had otherwise remained incomplete and dormant. Fragment III is in a simple ternary shape. The outer sections focus on multiple unrelated arpeggiated reharmonisations of an initial four note motif. The opening section does this via an exploration of flat keys, while the final section does so through a sequence of sharp keys. A contrasting middle section is more chordal but continues to develop the key motif, building to a climax on quartal harmony. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for almost all standards of pianist, including students and more advanced players. Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.1089367). This is the third in a set of three piano miniatures, which, as part of the compositional process, originally derived melodic material by setting lines from Shakespeare's Sonnets to music. This piece is essentially a set of textural variations on a folk-like theme, the tune appearing a fourth higher each time. The work employs simple variation techniques that are in-keeping with the folk genre, such as drones, modality, and parallel harmonies. Towards the end, a descending sequence leads to a final variation on the theme in the opening key, in rhythmic augmentation. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for most standards of pianist, including students and more advanced players.
