In Just in Time for Christmas, a group of senior Sunday School students decide that they’re too old to take part in the Christmas pageant. While hiding from their Musical Director, they discover a mysterious machine that takes them on an epic adventure through space and time! Along the way, they encounter a number of biblical characters (including Isaiah, Mary, Elizabeth, Joseph, the Innkeeper, and the Shepherds) and learn that the Christmas Story is important and real. The musical features a flexible script with parts for every age group, allowing for maximum flexibility with age-range, cast size, and rehearsal time. Each part of the story is followed by an original song sung by the entire cast. Costumes, sets, and props are also minimal, and there are no scene changes, which allow this show to be staged in any space, including traditional church sanctuaries. Just in Time for Christmas features five original songs written and arranged for school-aged children by Joanna Mills. The songs are all set in an accessible range for young children, and feature simple tunes which are easy to learn. This package contains two versions of each song; an easy unison version (some with an optional easy descant or counterpoint harmonies on the final chorus), and a 2-part choir version, which features simple, easy-to-learn harmonies. This allows you to mix and match your arrangements to suit the abilities of your singers and your rehearsal time constraints. For those students who do not read music, the lyrics are included in the script. The piano accompaniments are at an intermediate level and guitar chords are included, which allows older youth to participate as musicians (or allows experienced accompanists to learn them quickly). Composer’s Note - Choosing Our Own AdventureCanberra in the 1980s was a pretty fun place to be for a little kid. Well, i liked it. Playtime was very outdoorsy, with Lake Burley Griffin and other large tracts of bushland only twenty minutes from a​ nywhere​, it was easy to be somewhere beautiful pretty quickly. There was lots of bike riding, roller skating, tree climbing, skipping stones on the water, and running through waist high piles of autumn leaves. The change of seasons is so colourfully vivid in Canberra, it just makes you want to be outside to taste it!I’ve tried to capture that playfulness in this song which I dedicate to my big brother James with whom I spent so many of those childhood weekends. The name of the piece pays tribute to a series of books we loved to read, Choose Your Own Adventure​.-- Sally Whitwell

The text comes from a letter that Robert Inglis wrote in 1915 to the Commissioner of Pensions asking for a raise in his civil war pension. In providing information apparently requested by the Pension office, Robert details many events in his early years, adding a fair bit of sarcasm and wit to the narrative. The composer edited the content to fit into more of a strophic sea-shanty style. The piano part offers a sense of ocean waves as well as a few popular tunes of the day as commentary on the story. When he and his sister were in boarding school in Cowes on the Isle of Wight, he witnessed a historic yacht race. The following year, they sailed across the Atlantic with the family of their father’s third wife. Life with his stepmother must have been unbearable, because he “went to sea� time after time to escape the unpleasantness she brought to bear. The final departure left him shipwrecked on Hatteras with drunken shipmates. He made his way to Maryland where, to his horror, he witnessed a slave auction. Sensing the tension and possibly inspired to action, he headed west to join the 20th Indiana Infantry. He later served in the 51st Pennsylvania, the Provost Guard, and the U. S. Navy.
