SKU: A0.730915

Composed by Latin American Folk Song. Arranged by Sarah Martinez. Children,Folk,Multicultural,Traditional,World. Octavo. 4 pages. Sarah Martinez #339172. Published by Sarah Martinez (A0.730915).

This arrangement of Alfonso XII has been adapted for 2-part chorus and set to a piano accompaniment. This song tells a story about Alfonso XII, King of Spain from December 1874 until his death in November 1885. It is a song tale known in many Latin American countries. As is typical of folk songs, there are many popular variations and additional verses. English translation: Where are you going, Alfonso XII? Where are you going so sadly? I am looking for Mercedes because I lost her yesterday. Mercedes is already dead, and it's true because I saw her. Four dukes carried her through the streets of Madrid. The lanterns of the castle no longer want to light, Because Mercedes has died, and they are in mourning. Poor little Mercedes, she died like a flower. Similar arrangements for SATB, SAB, TB, and unison choirs are also available. You may also find this song under the alternate title ĀæDĆ³nde vas, Alfonso Doce?.

James Weldon Johnson's poem, The Gift to Sing, set for SA choir by Erik Meyer

This piece encourages singers (especially young ones) to find their own musical voice! It sets Johnson's introspective text about the quiet healing power of music, interspersed with sections for musical improvisation. Singers are welcome to create their own melody while the piano continues to play harmonically. Every voice's heartfelt contribution is valuable and beautiful.

I wrote this piece because throughout my career as a choir director, many of my singers have been told me I can't really sing, or so-and-so told me not to sing loud because I'm not good, or I can't improvise, etc. I want this piece to help bring out everyone's voice - no matter what you have been told in the past, you CAN sing, and more than that, I bet you can improvise! I hope this setting will help singers love their voice.

Uplifting and versatile

Drawing inspiration from the American Gospel idiom, this lively composition presents a rousing musical experience.Ā

Flexible parts
What sets Sing with Spirit apart is its adaptability, allowing it to be performed by unison singers, a two-part choir, mixed chorus, or even as an uplifting solo piano piece.Ā

Secular or SacredĀ
While embodying the spirit of American Gospel music, the lyrics intentionally avoid specific religious references. This makes it a suitable choice for secular events such as educational community choirs, while also finding its place in sacred settings such as worship services and church camps. The piece's versatility ensures that it complements diverse programming considerations.

Solo piano too!Ā
Moreover, Sing with Spirit offers the added bonus of a solo piano arrangement. The independently rich and full accompaniment lends itself well to modification for solo piano performance. With a separate piano part included, pianists have the flexibility to omit the vocal parts, allowing them to showcase their skills and explore the piece's musical depth on their own.

Additional musicians
A lead sheet with just melody and chords is included to enable additional musicians such as bass, drums, guitar, melody instrumentsā€¦

Whether preparing for a choir performance or seeking a dazzling solo piano piece, this sheet music is certain to inspire and captivate listeners.

BTW, The idea for this piece was sparked by an adult student sharing a 5-note run to which I added some chords on the fly. The result put caused the whole class to smile so I decided to flesh it out. You can see that here: https://youtu.be/6bN_VgrHiEM

SA Chorus & Piano - Digital Download

SKU: IZ.VMW231

Composed by Richard Sorce. Octavo. 8 pages. Imagine Music - Digital #VMW231. Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.VMW231).

8.5 x 11 inches.

Several years ago, while I was on the faculty at NYU, Elaine Gates, professor of choral music commissioned me to write a piece for her childrenā€™s choir at USDAN, where she was also the director of choral music. USDAN is a summer camp for the arts located on Long Island, NY. The following is a brief description of the camp:

Usdan opens up a world for children to joyfully express their creativity and develop their artistic skills.
Each summer, we bring professional teachers and artistsā€”actors, directors, playwrights, painters, sculptors, musicians, composers, dancers, poets, and novelistsā€”to teach and collaborate with our campers ages 5 to 18 from Long Island and New York City.

Set on 140 acres of natural beauty, Usdan is a welcoming and inclusive place within which campers have the freedom to build new friendships, explore nature, develop personal independence, and have fun, alongside their art-making.

ā€œIn Springtime is scored for SA and piano. I was given the liberty of choosing the subject matter and writing the words as well as the music. While the piece is not exactly ā€œa walk in the park vocally and harmonically for young people, their performance was magnificent.

Several sections of the accompaniment are syncopated, and this can cause a bit of difficulty for the singers, but the rhythm is quite effective, as are the soprano ā€œdivisi sections where the harmony becomes three-part.

Who doesnā€™t love springtime? Perform it joyfully!

Composerā€™s Note - Happy Place

Iā€™m a lesbian who came-of-age/came-out in the mid 1990s, which means I caught the tail end of those lesbian stereotypes you used to hear about. It made me feel like Iā€™d never inherited The Lesbian Gene. I was never one of the herbal tea sipping, yoga loving, hemp textiles wearing, hippie happy clappy campers of that time. I had girlfriends who were and I tried to humour them sometimes but it was always a strain.

I had this one girlfriend who made me go camping once, a gathering with her hippie pagan friends. It was all inoffensive enough, I was having a very nice time sitting in the shade reading my book. Rather stupidly, I made the mistake of letting someone rope me into a thing called Dā€‹rumming The Boundaryā€‹. They thought Iā€™d be good at it, being a professional musician. I thought it would probably please my girlfriend if I got involved, so I agreed to go along.

To my surprise, the drums theyā€™d set up were great instruments, some really top quality djembes that youā€™d be paying some good money for, so I made the rash assumption that the leader of this activity actually knew what she was doing. We were instructed to start drumming a hā€‹eartbeatā€‹ together, whereupon I discovered that these are people who couldnā€™t even play a plain old crotchet beat in ensemble. But they seemed to think they were playing in time, swooning and swaying and closing their eyes to ā€˜feelā€™ the music. It was starting to make me giggle. These were presumably the same lesbians Iā€™d seen out in Sydney nightclubs who couldnā€™t dance in time with an electronic beat that repeatedly hits you over the head with its obviousness?! Once Iā€™d had that thought, I couldnā€™t help my giggle becoming a full-blown guffaw. The dreadlocked hempy lady in charge glared at me, telling me I needed to relax into really fā€‹eeling the heartbeat. ā€‹Could she not see that it was because my whole body was shaking with hysterical laughter at their arhythmic playing? Honestly...

I guess I just really donā€™t like hippies. There, I said it out loud. I tried, I tried really hard, but I just prefer my city life. Itā€™s my ā€‹Happy Place.ā€‹

Composerā€™s Note - Treasure Chest

I wā€‹as commissioned by the Canberra International Music Festival in 2016 to write a work for childrenā€™s chorus. The concert was a Mothersā€™ Day event, sponsored by a couple of local boutique chocolatiers, so the works on the program were all chocolate and coffee themed, including J S Bachā€™s Coffee Cantata and a bunch of songs from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The festivalā€™s Artistic Director Roland Peelman asked me if I could write a new piece on this theme.

So I got thinking about chocolate and about Mothersā€™ Day and about how when youā€™re a little kid and have no earnings, you still give your mum a present for her special day (that is, your dad pays for it and you sign the card!). And if itā€™s chocolate, you might give her ā€‹yourā€‹ favourite chocolate instead of ā€‹hers,ā€‹ and all you are really waiting for is for her to offer you one. When I was a child, I always used to think of chocolate boxes as treasure chests, full of shining precious things only consumed on very special occasions. Because they were such a rarity, you really had to savour each sweet taste and gooey texture. Iā€‹ ā€™m sure from this song, youā€™ll be able to tell that I am a big sweet tooth!

Composed by Sally Whitwell. Children,Classical,Instructional. Octavo. 9 pages. Sally Whitwell #703279. Published by Sally Whitwell (A0.1099392).

Do you want to build a rocket? was originally composed for a wonderful group of children I worked with at the Young Music Society Winter School in Canberra. The first day that I went in to meet them, I sat down with them on the floor and asked them what kind of performance they wanted to build. It was around the time that the Disney animated feature Frozen was very popular with kids. Or not, as it turns out, because one little boyā€™s hand shot up straight away and he said: ā€œTell you what I donā€™t wanna build: a stupid snowman!ā€ He suggested we build a rocket instead. So thatā€™s what we did. Itā€™s a song about the wonder and curiosity we feel about the universe, of our desire to explore it, and of the determination and grit required to achieve that dream. Itā€™s some very hard yards to build a rocket and to learn to fly it, but our dreams are always worth the work! I hope you have fun with this song. Teachers, I invite you to get as theatrical as you dare with it. In our original performance we had all these toy instruments, toy toolkits, and painted cardboard boxes. (So many boxes!). Letā€™s just say, if you think itā€™s gonna be ā€˜too muchā€™, itā€™s probably exactly the right amount. Sally Whitwell August 2022.
