J. S. Bach's Goldberg Variations, BWV 988, published in 1741, remain a central part of Baroque keyboard literature, and like many of Bach's works, they stand as a testament to his seemingly effortless mastery of compositional technique. The piece begins with a simple Aria, built upon the ground bass that serves as the harmonic basis for each of the 30 variations that follow, and ends with a repetition of the Aria, having come full-circle.

This arrangement by David Haskins of selections from the Goldberg Variations was commissioned by Andrew McCandless, Principal Trumpet of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and was premiered at the Sun Valley Music Festival. Scored for 12 trumpets in two choirs, this arrangement is intended for advanced performers. Of the 30 original variations, 9 have been included here, presenting a variety of styles that are designed to highlight the lyrical and virtuosic capabilities of the trumpet.

This arrangement is scored for a double choir of six performers with the following instrumentation; each 6-part choir consisting of:

Piccolo Trumpet in B-flat, Trumpet in E-flat, 2 Trumpets in C, 2 Trumpets in B-flat. One C Trumpet doubles on a rotary and one B-flat Trumpet doubles on Flugelhorn.

An adaptation of Peter Cetera's classic 80's song for two-part choir with piano accompaniment. This is a fairly easy soprano-alto arrangement with nice triadic harmonies that are faithful to the style of the original song. It begins in the key of E flat, where the highest note for the sopranos is an Eb (top space of treble stave), and the lowest note for the altos is a Bb (below the treble stave).

This arrangement was commissioned for, and premiered by, Voices Co. Pop A Cappella Academy, for one of our Kids Ensemble. It is fun and catchy, and an extended arrangement has also been performed by our Adult Classes (SATB). 


VOCAL LAYOUT:

The melody, or lead line, is divided amongst the vocal parts to give variety. The B.G (background) parts replicate the instrumental accompaniment of the original track, filling out the arrangement and creating the contemporary texture that is at the heart of Pop A Cappella. The Vocal Percussion (Beatboxing) should be a feature, and they provide the arrangement with much of the groove and vibe it needs.

The dynamics give an indication which vocal parts should be strongest at any given moment, but changes may need to be made depending on the number / balance of singers, and the strengths of each vocal section. As a general rule, the melody or lead should be strongest, followed by any harmony parts (those with lyrics), followed by any background parts (Mmm's / Dmm's, etc).

RHYTHM & BASS:


This Beatboxing part is suitable for beginners, and is made up of groupings of patterns. Specific Beatboxing notes are included in their own section.

If your ensemble is without a low bass or a beatboxer you could consider the following options.

- Use electric bass guitar playing the bass part

- Use a drum kit or drum box (Cajon)

- Use a piano to provide some simple background accompaniment

If using clicks or claps, do so on the off beats (2 and 4).
