It is one of those tunes that seems to intensify on each restatement. The original words were written by Isaac Watts (1674 -1748). A Vocal Lead Sheet is included in the PDF. I have merged the two ideas and created a double choir version singing some of the verses of the original song, divided in a way similar to John Dowlands duet. Versions are also available for SATB-SATB (mixed double choir voice) and for woodwind and brass. The sound sample is my own performance of the ATBarB-ATBarB version. I have also added timpani in the recording, but these are not scored and are optional.

This catchy two-part version of the original three-part anthem with accompaniment, sets a text by Revd Canon Dr Gordon Giles, and was composed for the 2022 RSCM Harold Smart Anthem Competition. The work plays with alternating A minor and A major tonalities, with three verses exploring textural variation in the choral parts. The imitative recurring chorus is also varied on each return. The coda gradually builds in dynamics, texture and pitch, in setting repetitions of the word 'Amen', leading to the final A minor climax. It takes the form of a 7-verse Epiphany carol, with introduction and coda, setting a poem by Laurie Twinam. Verse 1 gives the option for a single solo voice. Otherwise vocal lines, for two-part (SA) choir or duet, retain the folk tune contour throughout, with fairly simple harmonies and a canon. Around this, the piano accompaniment weaves a set of characterful variations, as a commentary on each differing verse, which is always linked by a 2-bar 'turnaround'. The work explores aspects of both major and minor tonality, as well as modality (with the characteristic flattened seventh), thus working within and around the given folk idiom. This piece is appropriate for virtually any standard and size of SA choir, including school, student, community, church and cathedral choirs, as well as for duet. The accompaniment can be on piano, or for organ if slightly adapted by the player. It features a 3-verse structure (mirroring the text), with coda. The piece builds up throughout, as an attempt to depict the increasing sense of abundant love, referred to in the text. The main melodic material is deliberately simple and rather folk/chant-like. This essentially appears as a single line in the first verse, becoming a two-part canon (by one bar) in the second verse, and finally a two-part canon (by half a bar) in the third verse. The imitative coda leads to ultimate resolution at the end. The work is highly accessible, and is designed for performance by good SA choirs, able to effectively sustain such unaccompanied singing. A highly memorable, singable and repetitive main theme is supported by rippling arpeggios over a descending bass line. Within the rocking 6/8 time signature, an often modal accompaniment also features chains of gently warm seventh chords. This is a simple E minor setting of the familiar Good Friday words, using a repeated binary structure, almost in the manner of an alternating verse/chorus form. The piece is a counterpart to Howard's own 2016 setting of the Ave Verum Corpus, with which it shares the same key (also available via Sheet Music Plus). The chorus displays a clearly morose yearning in its appoggiaturas, upward leap and consequent falling phrase. By contrast, the verse is almost a recitative, featuring tense repetitions on one tone above a series of chromatically descending triads and pedal point. The work is appropriate for most standards of 2-part choir, including school, student, community, church and cathedral choirs. The accompaniment can be on piano or organ.
