The choral writing, frequently in unison, is generally very accessible for nearly any choir of modest ability. The accompaniment may vary from the traditional hymns periodically, but in general is very supportive of the voices. This setting is for SB voices, but it is also available in expanded voicing. If you are looking for something for Thanksgiving that is widely known and cherished, this may be it. This would be a welcome addition to the library with minimal voices. It comes from his Cantata no.147, written in 1723 during his first year as Thomaskantor of Leipzig. It is here arranged for SS choir, Flute and Piano. The flute part is designed to interweave with Bach's original accompaniment, which features almost continuous triplet movement. The words are by the British Poet Laureate Robert Bridges (1844-1930). The original version was written in the mid-1700s in Naples by the Catholic Bishop of Sant'Agata dei Goti, Alfonso Maria de’ Liguori. At that time it was called Quanno nascette Ninno and was written in the Neapolitan dialect in the style of a pastorale.The song was later re-written in Italian by Pope Pius IX and thereafter it became famous as a Christmas carol all over the world. Originally containing seven verses, today’s performances of the carol in Italy generally include only the first two verses. Notable recordings and performances of the carol include those by Sergio Franchi, Andrea Bocelli and Luciano Pavarotti. This arrangement features both Italian and English lyrics, with the English version being a very close adaptation of the original Italian. The piece unusually sets the familiar text within an aching minor key, in a slow tempo, and with generally quiet dynamics. A highly memorable, singable and repetitive main theme is supported by rippling arpeggios over a descending bass line. Within the rocking 6/8 time signature, an often modal accompaniment also features chains of gently warm seventh chords. The work is appropriate for most standards of 2-part choir, including school, student, community, church and cathedral choirs.
